Reading Response #2

Text
Ferris, Dana. What is a multilingual writer? Multilingual students and college writing, pp 23-
27.
Summary
In this passage, professor Ferris describes as a Multilingual writer (ML) someone who
is familiar with other language and can use it easily. As students, they have to face certain
challenges due to the differences between cultures: grammar mistakes, poor vocabulary or
reading difficulties. In spite of this, the writer also suggests a wide range of solutions for them
to make their time at college less difficult.
Claim
The most important idea one of my peers outside of this class would benefit from is
how important reading is, even outside of college.
By reading (both academically and leisure lectures) they will kill two birds with one
stone: they will learn and they will spend an enjoyable time.
Data
Reading is a natural and easy way to exposed to different words and sentence patterns. The
more one reads, the more one learns about the language, and the more tools are available for
writing (26).
Connections
In this reading we can extract different facts that could help my peers to improve their
English skills for college. Concretely, the most important idea one of my peers outside of this
class would benefit from is of how important reading is, even outside of college.
By reading (both academically and leisure lectures) they will kill two birds with one
stone: they will learn and spend an enjoyable time. Evidence can be found in the reading
passage: Reading is a natural and easy way to exposed to different words and sentence
patterns. The more one reads, the more one learns about the language, and the more tools are
available for writing.(26). This statement confirms some of the benefits that reading give us for
strengthen other areas, which in this case would be writing. My peers would be surprised of
how much they could improve if they increased their reading time. However, with this I am not
only referring of college assignments; free-time reading can be beneficial too. When we read for
pleasure, we may think that is a waste of time and we may be not aware that we are learning, but
in fact, we are doing it.
Vocabulary
1. Contrastive; tending to contrast; ML students who have learned to read and write in another
language may be affected by contrastive or intercultural rhetoric. (23)
2. Proofread; to read in order to find and mark errors to be corrected; they may need extra writing
or grammar classes designed for ML students, extra materials such as grammar/editing
handbooks or web sites, one-on-one tutoring, or a reliable friend who is a good writer to help
proofread their papers before turning them in (25)
3. Charts; Represent something by using graphics; these include strategies such as previewing a
text (looking over a reading assignment to get a general sense of it before reading carefully),
highlighting and taking notes, creating outlines or charts of important information, analyzing
unfamiliar vocabulary, and using reading in ones writing(26)
