Objective

To observe Maths teaching in action and begin to understand effective strategies for Math
teaching and learning in groups.

Procedure

You will need a copy of the Observation Table:

Before the Observation

Arrange to observe a lesson that focuses on Maths and discuss the lesson with the
teacher beforehand so you can know the Objectives and the lesson development.
Ask the teacher what strategies she will use to help her deliver the lesson.

1. What was the objective of the lesson? The students learnt how to countdown for subtraction

4. How much teaching was done in L1? The schools that follow the ministry of education
teach the math subject in Arabic so, whole lesson was in Arabic.

5. Why do you think the teachers used L1? The teachers used the first language because the
ministry of education gave them the curriculums in Arabic so, the teachers should teach the
students in Arabic.

6. Did the teacher use manipulatives? What were the purpose of these? Teacher used the
manipulatives in the activities period and that helped students to learn fast by finished the
activities early and enjoy while did the activities.

7. Were there any other resources/materials used to deliver the lesson? The teacher used
PowerPoint to present the lesson then, did with students some activities by using objects and
after that, students answered the book questions so, teacher depend on those materials.

8. What strategies/method did she use to teach the concept? Teacher used the PPP model in the
lesson so, she depends on presentation, practice and production.

9. Did teacher do whole-class teaching or group work? Teacher was taught the students in
whole class then, she divided the students in groups for activities.

10. When did she work with the whole class? Why? The teacher worked with whole class while
they answered the book questions by read the questions and try to helped them in some case.

11. How much of the lesson were the students using the book? The students used the math book
in the last period of the class to answer the book questions.
