Copy of How the Zebra got his Stripes for all students
Graphic organizer
Key Vocabulary or Terminology:

Summarize: give a brief statement of the main points of something

Stripes: a long narrow band or strip
Zebra: an African wild horse with black and white stripes

Background Knowledge/Experience/Motivation: For my intro task I will tell the students what I did
over the weekend and then ask them to discuss as a table group what the main things I did were and then
summarize on the board what they say.

Teaching Sequence:
First I will begin the lesson with my story of what I did over the weekend which will help the
students recall what a good summary looks like and how they can gather meaning from a
story.
Next I will gice background information on How the Zebra got his Stripes by introducing the
African culture this story originated from, I will show pictures and videos to help get the
students in the right mindset.
Then I will have the class read the story together
I will then walk them through how to use the graphic organizer (shown above) if it helps them
manage the ideas in the story and organize the different parts of summary.
Finally, I will give each group their own different stories/fables and have them as groups decide
what the main ideas are and present it to the class.

Product: The product of this assignment will an oral presentation of stories. Each table will receive a
different story from a variety of different cultures and they will work together to read the story and
summarize the important parts which they will then present to the class. This will allow to students to
collaborate as well as allow me to informally assess their understanding of summary.

Extensions: This assignment is good because it teaches students how to summarize which can be
translated to many different lessons.
