Lesson Plan Title: Cultures

Unit/Theme/Concept: Cultures (Social Studies)

Duration: Approximately 60 minutes

State Standards Addressed:

General Goal:
1.5a Students know the eight characteristics of culture include where I live, how I
dress, language, what I play, what I eat, family, celebrations, and art and
music.

Cognitive Objective:
1.5a Given a worksheet, students will draw pictures and sentences of eight
characteristics of their culture with 80% or better on the worksheet.

Affective Objective:
1.5a Given instruction on a culture activity, students will follow directions using
the behavior checklist 80% or better on the task.

Resources/Materials/Technology: computer, projector, PowerPoint presentation, Hello


Song! By Global Wonders from YouTube, white board, colored markers, dry erase
marker, pencils, erasers, colored pencils, and culture worksheets.

Preparation the Environment:


The classroom will be set up with the students desks in a horse shape facing the
front projector and whiteboard. The beginning of class is revolved around the teachers
demonstration, the concept map, computer and projector must be set up before the
students arrive. The teacher should make sure that there are dry erase markers available.
During the individual activity, the students will draw pictures of the eight
characteristics of their culture on the worksheet. The teacher must email the parents
ahead of time asking them to ask their child to pick one of each eight characteristics of
the culture includes family, dress, what I play, language, food, celebration, and arts and
music. Once the teacher has received the list of the eight characteristics of culture from
the parents, teacher must put the pictures of them to represent the eight characteristics of
the culture on the PowerPoint all ahead of time.
Lastly, the teacher must make sure the room is stocked with blank sheets of paper,
tape, colored pencils, and pencils. The culture worksheets and follow-up questions that
will be needed throughout the lesson must be printed off before the students arrive. To
limit distractions, the teacher should close the door before beginning the class.
Prepare the Audience:
At the beginning of the class, the teacher will greet the students and provide them
with a plan for the day. When telling the students the plan, they will watch a video Hello
Song! to motivate them to learn about the culture. The co-teacher, and resource teacher
will provide support and encouragement as well as to help motivate the students to learn
about the eight characteristics of culture. Lastly, the teacher will tell the students what
he/she expects out of them as individuals and a whole class.

Teaching strategies/methodologies:

Warm-up/Introduction: (9:00 AM 9:15 AM)


The students are getting organized and seated; the Concept Map and PowerPoint
Presentation will be projected on the whiteboard for their viewing, and follow up
questions paper on the table for discuss about the culture. I will greet the students when
they have all arrived and give them an overview of our days activities and objectives.
Good morning, students! After todays class, you will become very familiar with
culture. This is called a concept map. It shows us many different reasons why it is
very beneficial to know cultures. Look at that variety. First, I will teach you
everything you need to know about culture on the PowerPoint, and then we will
have an activity when I will show you the video of Hello Song and you will use
them to describe a culture and then you will share your ideas with your
classmates in the class. We have a lot of fun things to learn today!

Discuss about culture:


1. Use PowerPoint Presentation about cultures. I will show the pictures of culture on
the slide one of PowerPoint Presentation that it will help students to be imagining of
what is culture. I have to explain to the students about cultures that they will be
exploring all the things that make them unique and special.
2. Ask each student to share something that makes them special. Other students will
listen and pay attention when each student will speak about special.
3. Ask the students to think about students who shared similar answer. Ask the students
to think about students who shared different answers. Encourage students to discuss
about it as a class.
4. Explain to the students that everyone is different because our differences make us
unique and special.
5. Ask the students to think about what the world would be like if everyone looked,
spoke, and acted the in the same way. I will encourage a few students to share their
ideas with the class.
6. Show the students the Hello Song! video from YouTube and then briefly discuss
the video using prompting questions as What are the children saying to each other?
Do the students all speak the same language? I have to encourage the students to
answer two questions and discuss about both questions.
This video is to good exposure to the students to learn different languages
across the world. It is good begin to learn about the cultures across the world.
Addition, the students will learn how to say hello in another language across the
world.

- Record a lesson for the students
- Given an outline on the whiteboard
- Use visual aids, such as PowerPoint presentation, pictures, videos, and whiteboard

Instruction: (9:15 AM 9:30 AM)


1. Use PowerPoint and show the students to see slide 2 about what is culture and the
list of eight characteristics of culture with the pictures. Let the students look at the
pictures of culture and encourage them think about their culture.
2. Give instruction to students:
Point the word culture. Ask the students what culture means. I encourage you to
share your ideas, and then explain to us about culture. Yes someones culture has
to do the way he or she speak, how he or she dress, he or she celebrates, what
kind of foods he or she eat, his or her family traditions, what kind of games,
activities, and sports he or she play, and where he or she live. Point the list of
eight characteristics of culture. We will learn about the eight characteristics of
culture together. I encourage you share some of your culture to us that we will
learn from you.
3. Show the students to see slide 4 on PowerPoint about one of eight characteristics of
culture is where people live. There are different pictures of people live to help
students to be imaging of where people live. Then I encourage the students to share
their idea of where people live. Allow a few students to share their ideas, and then
explain to them that someones culture has to do with the way they live.
4. Show the students to see slide 5 on PowerPoint about one of eight characteristics of
culture is dress. There are different pictures of people dress. Then I encourage the
students to share their idea of how people dress. Allow a few students to share their
ideas and then explain to them that someones culture has to do with the way they
dress.
5. Show the students to see slide 6 on PowerPoint about one of eight characteristics of
culture is language. There are different pictures of languages people spoke. Then I
encourage the students to share their idea of people spoke a language. Allow a few
students to share their ideas and then explain to them that someones culture has to
do with the way they spoke.
6. Show the students to see slide 7 on PowerPoint about one of eight characteristics of
culture is people play. There are different pictures of people play. Then I encourage
the students to share their idea of what people play. Allow a few students to share
their ideas and then explain to them that someones culture has to do with the way
they play.
7. Show the students to see slide 8 on PowerPoint about one of eight characteristics of
culture is people eat. There are different pictures of people eat. Then I encourage the
students to share their idea of what people eat. Allow a few students to share their
ideas and then explain to them that someones culture has to do with the way they
eat.
8. Show the students to see slide 9 on PowerPoint about one of eight characteristics of
culture is celebrations. There are different pictures of celebrations. I will give few
examples of celebration to make sure that students understand what it means. For
example, I explain that my family and I celebrate Christmas on December 25th every
year. Then I encourage the students to share their idea of what is celebration. Allow
a few students to share their ideas, and then explain to them that someones culture
has to do with the way they celebrate.
9. Show the students to see slide 10 on PowerPoint about one of eight characteristics of
culture is art and music. There are different picture of art and music. Then I
encourage the students to share their idea of what is art and music. Allow a few
students to share their ideas, and then explain to them that someones culture has to
do with the way they make art, they listen to music, and they play music.

- Give students examples of eight characteristics of the culture

Individual Activity: (9:30 AM 9:55 AM)


1. Give instruction to students:
I want to show you my anchor chart shows all the characteristics of my culture.
Now it is your turn to show me what you know. You will be making your own
culture poster! I will give you culture worksheet. First, you will have to read the
words in each box on the culture worksheet. Then you have to draw a picture in
each box using colored pencils about this aspect of your culture. For example, in
the box labeled What I eat, draw fried chicken and rice. Get creative! Lastly,
you have to write a sentence in each box about this aspect of your culture.
2. Pass out the Culture worksheet, coloring materials, and pencils.
3. Tell students to begin and allow the students to get to work!
4. Help students to read the words in each box on the Culture worksheet.
5. Rotate around the classroom and help students who need support. Assist these
students as needed.

Accommodations:
- Give students examples of eight characteristics of the culture on the whiteboard
- Take more time to complete a culture worksheet

Wrap Up: (9:55 AM 10:00 AM)


1. Once everyones done with his or her culture worksheet. I will collect the students
culture worksheets. We will have brief discussion about review the eight
characteristics of culture.
2. Show the students a website. I will encourage them to check this website to learn
about the cultures.
This website allow that all of you can curious about the world and cultures.
Addition, it includes games, and videos that you will enjoy to play and learns to
explore the world and cultures at the same time.
3. I will explain that we will continue this activity on Tuesday, and they will share
some of their culture to us.
4. Tell students to check the Monday folder on the class blog for directions on their
homework assignment.
5. Wish them a good work! High fives to each student before students leave.
6. Wish them a good day and be safe!

Homework Assignment #1:

Mini Project - My Culture

(Monday)

Please you help your child with mini project. Your child will have a mini project about

your culture. There are seven characteristics of the culture are language, foods, arts and

music, celebrations, clothes and dress, customs, and family traditions. Your child has to

make creative with your culture on your poster. Your child can draw pictures or print the

pictures of your culture on the poster. Your child has to write a sentence of each

characteristics of the culture with the pictures. It is a good exposure to your child to know

about childs culture.

It will be due by next Friday because I give your child more time on their mini project.

Your child will share their culture with classmates in front of the class next Friday.
