ESSENTIAL II: Basic Organizational and

Systems Leadership
for Quality Care and Patient Safety

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN] 2008, a

baccalaureate prepared nurse comprehends and applies quality improvement concepts, processes

and outcome measures. The nurse is equipped with the necessary tools to initiate and/or assist in

the development of quality and safety improvement plans, monitoring the outcomes of initiatives

(i.e. Bedside Shift Report[BSR]). The outcomes resulted in the implementation of hospital-wide

BSR at University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center. BSR is supported by

evidence-based practice to improve quality care and patient safety reflected through audits and

patient satisfaction scores. Which then led to the expansion of BSR throughout the entire

University of Maryland Medical System.

Description of Creative Implementation Leadership Project

The Leadership Project is a presentation of the systematic approach to operating an

organization. Initially an evaluation of my leadership style and personality was completed.

Next, a comprehensive view of the facility and the services provided was reviewed. The review

includes the governing regulatory agencies, legal and ethical considerations, the culture of

development and team creation.

and recruitment of employees is essential, which Human Resources provides. To be successful,

they also need to create an organizational plan which includes: Disaster Preparedness and

Critical Issues.

Essential II of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing,2008, equipped the

baccalaureate prepared nurse to participate in a quality and safety improvement innovation,

Bedside Shift Report, (BSR) in her organization. The implementation was a collaborative effort

between upper management and the nursing staff. The BSR taskforce continues to meet every

other month to discuss successes and areas for improvement. The data is displayed monthly on

the hospital intranet. The positive impact of BSR is a timelier, patient included end of shift

report, an increase in patient safety and a decline in calls to the front desk.
