Subject ENGLISH

Grade Level 6

Learning Objective 6.5 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a
variety of fictional texts, narrative nonfiction, and poetry.
Content

a) Identify the elements of narrative structure, including setting,

character, plot, conflict, and theme.
Online Activity This lesson will serve as reinforcement and reflection of the
knowledge the students gain during their reading of Lord of the
Flies. It is to be conducted entirely online as this is an online class.
All materials needed will be provided by the teacher ahead of time.
Students will have already been instructed to have finished Lord of
the Flies prior to this class period. The students will be instructed
to follow the link provided and participate in a quick simulation,
testing their knowledge of the novel. At the end, they will print out
the results on their check, which explains how well they understand
the novel. It is important that students have downloaded the latest
version of Flash Player on their devices.

First, students will be directed to

nobelprize.org/educational/literature/golding. The students will not
need to create an account to take part in the simulation. They will
then click Play the Lord of the Flies Game. They begin the
simulation by clicking on the moving silhouettes on the cliff. They
must then match quotes and items to the characters they are
associated with. Once finished, they will click the GO ON sign that
appears on the bottom right. After completing the first part of the
simulation, the students will click the center of the game, depicting
a pig running across an open field. This part of the game is a test of
their understanding of various symbolisms appearing within the
text. Again, once completed, the students will proceed to the next
part by clicking the GO ON sign. The final step of the simulation
will be accessed by the students clicking on the moving tree on the
right side of the beach. This part asks four questions, gauging the
students understanding of the novels theme. After the four
questions are answered, the students will select GO ON for the
Pedagogy

final time. They will then click on the newly-appeared ship. This
gives biographical information on William Golding and shows the
results of their simulation, which is explained on a scale of 1-5.
Upon completion of the simulation, the students will take a
screenshot of their results, which will then be either uploaded or
emailed to the instructor.

After the students have completed the simulation, they should

either have reaffirmed their knowledge of the novel, or will have
identified the areas of the text that they need to re-visit. They will
then create a discussion board entry detailing their thoughts on the
novel, whether they liked or disliked it (and why), and also if they
found the simulation to be helpful or not. After their initial post,
they must also respond to at least two of their peers posts.
