Design for Instruction *Anticipatory set*
Student Activities & Procedures The year is 1787 and leaders from all over the states came together to write
the constitution. Leaders of the states wanted a strong yet fair national
government. They also wanted to protect individual freedoms and prevent the
government from abusing its power. So they created 3 special branches. Boys
and girls, by a show of hands who can tell me what our lesson is going to be
about today? *Wait for students to answer* that is correct! We are going to
learn about the three branches of government, but this time, the three branches
in our own state, Florida. How exciting!
*Objective*
In todays lesson students will be able to identify the powers of each branch,
identify the branches of government in Florida, understand the foundation of
Floridas Constitution, and acknowledge there are state and local government
officials in Florida.
The purpose of these objectives are to allow students to make a transition from
knowing the three branches of government as a whole, to now understanding
and identifying the state and local governments in Florida.
Procedures
Pre-assessment (5 minutes)
1. After teacher has done anticipatory set, the teacher will then test students
prior knowledge by having a Kahoot game (UDL 3.1)
https://play.kahoot.it/#/getready?quizId=0f9e5434-4ec3-42f3-9b17-
996297886bcd on the 3 branches of government. This game will strictly be on
the 3 branches of government excluding Floridas.
2. From the Kahoot game, teacher will then complete a direct teach upon the
three branches of government in Florida.
Direct teach (15 minutes)
1. Teacher will conduct direct teach by first writing the three branches of
government on the board and allow students to come to the board and identify
the powers of each branch (ESOL students can look to board as a guide).
Teacher will then proceed with the direct teach by stating the final definition
of the branches: The Legislative Branch to make the laws. Congress is made
up of two houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives. The
Executive Branch to enforce the laws. The Judicial Branch to interpret the
laws.
2. Teachers will inform students that the state's first constitution was first written
in 1838. The current constitution is Florida's sixth, and was adopted in 1968.
The constitution is reviewed every twenty years to determine whether or not
revisions should be made by the legislature. These revisions are called
amendments. In 1998, a revision was made to our state constitution involving
the executive branch of government.
3. Teacher will then transition to Floridas government and powers. Teacher will
state that Floridas government also is divided into Legislative, Executive, and
Legislative. The Governor, as head of the executive branch, tells the legislators
the state issues that he has determined need to be worked on during their
meeting session. The Lieutenant Governor, which is similar to a VP, helps the
Governor to keep those issues in the minds of the legislators. The executive
branch executes the laws. The judges and justices of the judicial branch
determine the facts, interpret the law, and make rulings in cases brought to
court. The legislative branch has exclusive law-making power and determines
the general policies by which the problems of society are to be met.
4. Teacher will then ask students if they know who the current governor of
Florida is. *Allow students time to answer* answer: Rick Scott. (UDL 4.1)
(Have picture up of Rick Scott so ESOL students can understand).
5. Now introduce the local governments in Florida. Explain to students that the
SocialStudiesLesson/UnitPlanTemplate(precursortoTeacherWorkSample(TWS)inInternshipII)
local government is divided into four types: counties, municipalities, school
districts, and special districts. Explain to students that counties are governed
by state officers, ex; sheriff. The municipalities are often referred to as towns,
villages, and cities. Municipalities also provide aid to the community with
water, waste collection, and etc. School districts are governed by school
boards and operates public and schools. Lastly, special districts are locations
which holds power of a city, ex; Walt Disney world.
6. After teacher has taught students the governments and powers in Florida,
centers will be set up tomorrow to go more in depth about Floridas 3
branches of government.

*For hearing impaired students everything will also be on the board in forms
of a PowerPoint for better understanding*
