Materials:
Video Link to E.T. when E.T. wants to phone home

Video Comprehension Worksheet that goes along with the video
Homesickness Powerpoint
Students will need a piece of paper and writing utensil to write down their story
Homework: Homesickness Writing Prompt

Overview of Procedure:
Students will be watching the video clip from E.T. After, they will fill-out a listening
comprehension worksheet, and discuss with the class together. Towards the end, students
will then create their own story about homesickness with a partner and present to others
in the class.

Detailed Procedure:
Intro (5 minutes):
Ask the students a time where they were away from home and the feelings that they felt.
Write the following questions on the board. Give students 30 to 40 seconds to consider
the questions.
Questions would be What kind of feelings they felt? What did they miss? How did their
family react? How they felt about the change and culture?
After the students have considered the questions, allow the students to come up to the
board on their own to write their answers underneath the questions.
Have the students read out the answers after. Name some of the emotions that have
previously been discussed, such as happy, sad, nervous, excited etc.
After write the word homesickness on the board, and explain that these kind of
emotions make up an even more complex emotion called homesickness.
Move into video activity.

Video Activity (15 minutes):

Tell the students that we will be watching a video that will show an example of
homesickness, and that they will be answering questions on a handout about what
happens in the video.
Show video to students
Have the students fill out the handout.
Call on the students to answer the questions out loud and together as a whole class.

Input/Instruction (10 minutes):

Show a powerpoint that has a definition of homesickness and several images of
homesickness.
On the powerpoint, there will also be several other emotions that come with
homesickness like anxiety, sadness, loneliness, ect.
Have the students discuss with a partner what they do to deal with homesickness, and to
come up with some examples.
On the last slide of the powerpoint, there will be an example of a homesickness story,
students will be asked to make their own homesickness story in groups of two to three
students. Afterwards, the students create a homesickness story, they will present to other
groups.
Output (30 minutes):
Students will work in pairs or in groups of three and create a story about homesickness.
They can choose to follow the model of the example, or be as creative as they like, as
long as they create a story about a person with homesickness and how they deal with
homesickness.
After creating a story about homesickness, the pairs will split up and make a new pair
with another group. Each partner will take a turn reading and sharing their story to the
other partner. After each partner is done sharing their story, the students will have an
opportunity to stand up and share their partners story in front of the class.

Anticipated Problems and Solutions:

Some students simply will not feel comfortable talking about their own personal
experiences with homesickness. In order to encourage students to tap into their own
experiences to help improve their understanding of the concept, the teacher could start by
giving their own experience of homesickness as an example to make the students feel
more comfortable.
We might run out of time when it comes to the activity, and so if we are not able to create
the homesickness story in class, students will create their own story individually as
homework, instead of the writing prompt worksheet.

Assessment:
The teachers will be calling on students to answer the listening comprehension questions.
The teacher will be calling on the students to present their stories and have everyone in
the class tell their partners story. If there is not enough time, then teacher will have them
present in the next class.
The teacher will be walking around the room and making sure that the students are
understanding the materials when they are creating the stories.

Follow Up/Homework:
