Using these Rubrics

These rubrics are so easy to use, and are

perfect for self-assessment!

After each piece of writing that I would like to be

scored, I give students the appropriate rubric
Narrative, Informative, or Opinion.

Students use a yellow highlighter or marker to

highlight the rubric as a self-assessment. The
first few times students will need a lot of
scaffolding.

Then when its time for you to score the rubric,

you will highlight the rubric in pink.

I explain to them that our goal is that we agree

on what theyve included in their writing. Yellow +
Pink = Orange!

My opinion is clearly stated at the beginning of my paragraph.

I use a lead that gets my readers attention.
I have 3 reasons that support my opinion or point of view.
I have at least one explanation for each reason.
My thoughts are organized in an order that makes sense.
I use linking words and phrases (such as, because, therefore, since, for
example) to connect opinion and reasons.
My conclusion restates my opinion.
My sentences start in different ways. (Ex. They dont all start with I)
I used descriptive verbs and adjectives.

I edited my writing to make sure that:

o I indented the first line of my paragraph.
o My spelling is correct.
o I use the same verb tense for the whole piece.
o I used punctuation (. , ! ?) correctly in all sentences.
o I used capital letters for all proper nouns and at the beginning of
sentences.
o All of my sentences are complete no fragments or run-ons.
o All of my subjects and verbs agree.
o My handwriting is neat and legible.

Now count how many items on the checklist you highlighted to find
your score below.

I introduce my characters and/or narrator at the beginning.

The problem is introduced at the beginning of the story.
I use a lead that gets my readers attention.
My story includes at least 3 events related to the problem.
The events are organized in an order that makes sense.
I use time-order words and phrases (e.g., first, next, then, after) to
show the order of events.
I use dialogue to show how my character responds to situations.
I describe my characters actions, thoughts, and feelings about what
is happening in the story.
My ending provides closure to the story.
