ASSIGNMENTS (1 & 2 2 pages)

The assignments will each contribute 15% to your total course grade (total 30%)
Responses should be done in Microsoft word and/or Excel and posted in the assignment dropbox

Assignment #1 (Question 4-10)

The operations manager of a musical instrument distributor feels that demand for bass
drums may be related to the number of television appearances by the popular rock group
Green Shades during the preceding month. The manager has collected the data in the
following table:
GREEN SHADES
DEMAND FOR TV
BASS DRUMS APPEARANCES
3 3
6 4
7 7
5 6
10 8
8 5

a) Graph these data to see whether a linear equation might describe the relationship
between the groups television shows and bass drum sales. [3 marks]
b) Using the equations presented in this chapter, compute the SST, SSE, and SSR. Find
the least squares regression line for these data. [8 marks]
c) What is your estimate for bass drum sales if the Green Shades performed on TV six
times last month? [4 marks]

Assignment # 2 (Question 4-19)
Bus and subway ridership in Washington, D.C., during the summer months is believed to be

NUMBER OF
TOURISTS RIDERSHIP

8 12 20
9 14 27
10 20 44
11 15 34
12 7 17

a) Plot these data and determine whether a linear model is reasonable. [3 marks]
b) Develop a regression model. [5 marks]
c) What is expected ridership if 10 million tourists visit the city? [4 marks]
d) If there are no tourists at all, explain the predicted ridership. [3 marks]
