The Ideal Hospitality Leader

What is unique about the context of the hospitality and tourism industry?
How do leaders excel in this context?
How do current managers and faculty members define/talk about/say is important about leading
in the context of the hospitality and tourism industry?
How has my view of leading in the hospitality and tourism industry changed?
What are the behaviors for each of the competencies that are most connected to my vision of the
ideal leader in the HTM context?

Provide a narrative about your vision of the ideal leader in the hospitality and
tourism context and the leader you envision yourself becoming.

Working in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry allows you to have the opportunity to
interact with people around the world. Its an industry that is based all around the interaction
of others, and making people happy. Also not every day is ever the same in the Hospitality
Industry, everyday is different and unique. Leaders excel in the Hospitality Industry by
maintaining a positive spirit of optimism, have the ability to multitask, demonstrate superior
expressive customer service, and have strong interpersonal communicative skills. My current
manager expresses the importance of exceeding expectations for sales goals, stresses
attention on the profits of the company, and to gain as much experience as possible from a
variety of different departments. Before entering the Hospitality Industry, I wasnt fully
aware of all the opportunities that were available at a Hotel. There are so many different
departments that you can work in, as long as you care about people there will be a job
available in the Hospitality Industry that is suited towards your personality. I also wasnt
aware of how much problem solving takes place on a day to day bases. While going through
the Hospitality Program I envision myself strengthening my Interpersonal Communication
skills, gaining more experience to improve my superior expressive service, maintain my
spirit of optimism while multitasking, to eventually become a successful professional leader
that my coworkers can depend on, respect and confide in.

Career Goals

What are the possible ways to sustain the lifestyle I want in the experience economy?
What kind of work would take advantage of my talents, as I perceive them now?
What am I considering that I never thought possible before?
Even though the job doesnt exist today, how would I really like to spend my time?

Based on what you know about your values, passions, and talents, what would
be your dream career in the long term? Hint: Think Bigger.

My dream career is to be the general manager of a small boutique hotel in Northern

California and then to eventually invest in my own Boutique Inn that would be
marketed towards upcoming tech savvy generations.

What would be an ideal position/career/life choice for you 5 years after

graduating?

My ideal position 5 years from now is to be a Housekeeping Manager or Sales

Manager of a large corporate hotel.

List a short-term career goal achieved by your graduation date.

My short term goal is to obtain a supervisor role at a large corporate hotel within the
housekeeping department.

Other Goals
What extra curricular things could I do to help toward my dream job?
What scares me that I should try to overcome?
What skills do I think I want to develop?
How can I get more involved in the industry in ways that suit my personality?
Who do I know that I should reach out to that might help with my career?
How can I learn more about the possibilities for me upon graduation?

Identify 3 goals for your college journey. Begin each statement I Will

1. I will become a board member of the Lodging Management Student

Association Club, so I can take on responsibilities and gain leadership
experience.

2. I will apply for every summer internship opportunity available at major

hotel corporations so I can strengthen the possibility of obtaining my 5
year goal.

2
3. I will become certified in Smith Travel Accommodations Report by taking
a class at San Diego State next semester, and will become certified in
Microsoft Office System to prove that I have the technological strength and
skills, necessary to take on a management position.

SECTION TWO: REFLECTIONS

________________________________________________________________

Simulations

Reflect on your strengths and weaknesses during the simulations. Identify the
changes you made from the first simulation to the second and areas where you
think you made the most improvements.

I demonstrated a lot of strengths in my first simulation project. During my first project I

displayed a lot of Role model characteristics such as planning, technical service, creative
decision-making, interpersonal communication, expressive service, coaching and
training, networked, professionalism and spirit of optimism. My weakness was that I
sometimes would shy away from my ideas, that I need to display more confidence in my
ideas and to overall believe in myself. As for changes from the first simulation to the
second, I actually got a bit lost in my perception of myself based off the Print
Assessment. I got some feedback that I was a bit outspoken and sometimes can come off
as intimidating, so I tried to tone down my intensity during the second simulation. This
however back fired a bit because my strengths werent able to shine through to the
professional assessor. I felt a bit confused at the end of the second simulation on what I
should improve.

My Perception and the Perceptions of Others

What did the industry observers say I did well/competency strengths?

How do my peers talk about my role on a team?
How did feedback from others surprise me?
What were the key lessons from my mentor network?
What disappointed me?
What exhilarated me?
What can I change/not change?
What would I do differently if I could?
What is my role in the outcomes of the semester?

Consider the questions above and synthesize what you learned about yourself
this semester.

3
My number one strength that I received from both industry professionals was that I was
very creative and displayed strong creative decision-making skills. I wasnt afraid to
think outside of the box, and was very insightful in coming up with creative ways to
diagnose a problem. My peers in my group projects found that my top strengths were
interpersonal communication, professionalism, spirit of optimism and planning. They
found that I was an active listener, who was approachable and kept the group morale
high. They found that the product I delivered was professional and that I had a lot of
creative ideas, and the Adobe Photoshop skill was an extra bonus. The main feedback that
I was most surprised about was my level of professionalism. Majority of my feedback
cards stated that one of my strongest competencies was that I display a high level of
professionalism, which felt really rewarding to hear. Im glad that I came off as a
trustworthy team member that they could rely on. They key lessons I learned from my
mentor network is to lead by example and got a lot of great advice on what to take next
semester. I was disappointed that I didnt display enough confidence in myself and thats
something I definitely am going to incorporate more in work, school and my life. If I
could do anything differently it would be to not self evaluate myself too much, and stay
confident in my choices and decisions.

SECTION THREE: COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT

________________________________________________________________

For each competency, list four behaviors that convey the essence of the
competency in action aligned with your vision of the ideal leader in hospitality and
tourism. You may find it helpful to review the competency definitions article and
industry interviews. Then, for each competency, assess yourself currently using
the rating scale below. These ratings will serve as your baseline assessment,
and you will reassess your own development in future semesters. Your ratings
are for the purpose of learning and growth onlyratings will not influence course
grades. Enter a number of 1 through 7 for yourself for each of the competencies.

takes 10-20 total hours to complete during a semester. Development activities
help students move closer to their idealized vision as leaders. Students
customize development activities to take place in their own learning spaces
school, work, social clubs and other personal settings. It may be helpful to review
