1 Inroduction:

KBMC has decided to implement sewerage system within its jurisdiction. As a part of this
project weirs are proposed across various streams. This document covers all aspects of design
and detailed calculations of all components

List of the structures is as follows

2 Design Data:

TOTAL FLOOR LENGTH

The total length of impervious floor which consists of upstream floor, upstream glacis, crest,
downstream glacis, downstream basin and end sill required from consideration of safety
against sliding is fixed in conjunction with the depth of downstream cutoff to satisfy the
requirements of exit gradient, scour and economy.
SCOUR

Scour is likely to occur in erodible soils, such as clay, silt, sand and shingle, noncohesive
soils, the depth of scour is calculated from the Laceys formula.

PROTECTION WORKS

Upstream Block Protection

Just beyond the upstream end of the impervious floor, pervious protection comprising of
cement concrete blocks of adequate size laid over loose stone is provided. The cement
concrete blocks shall be of adequate size so as not to get dislodged, and shall generally be of
1 500 x 1 500 x 900 mm size for barrages in alluvium reaches of rivers.

The length of upstream block protection shall be approximately equal to D, the design depth
of scour below the floor level.

Downstream Block Protection

Pervious block protection is provided just beyond the downstream end of impervious floor as
well. It shall comprise of cement concrete blocks of adequate size laid over a suitably
designed inverted filter for the grade of material in the river bed. The cement concrete blocks
shall generally be not smaller than 1 500 x 1 500 x 900 mm size to be laid with gaps of 75
mm width, packed with gravel. The length of downstream block protection shall be
approximately equal to 1.5 D. Where this length is substantial, block protection with inverted
filter may be provided in part of the length and block protection only with loose stone spawls
in remaining length. A toe wall of masonry or concrete extending up to about 500 m below
the bottom of filter is provided at the end of the inverted filter to prevent it from getting
disturbed.
DISCHARGE

The discharge shall be obtained from the following formula:

Q = CLH;

where

Q = discharge in cumecs,

C - Coefficient of discharge (in free flow condition),

L = clear waterway of the barrage or weir in m, and

H = total head causing the flow in m.

CROSS SECTION DIMENSIONS

Top with a width of 2 m is provided. A vertical upstream face is provided slope of 2 : 1 is

given on downstream side.

3 Design Calculation:

(A) Weir Design Calculations-

1. Weir Section Check for sliding
Upstream ht. of water pressure = 2.0 +.0.75 = 2.75 m
Pressure at Bottom level = 2.75 x 10 = 27.5 KN/m2
Sliding force = x 27.5 x 2.75 = 37.8 kN

2. Buoyant wt. of weir section

(9 x 0.75 + [ 3+2 ] 2) x ( 25-10) = 138 kN
2
3. Assuming coefficient of friction = 0.40
at the foundation level
Frictional Force = 0.4x 1.38 = 55 kN
Factor of safety against sliding =55/37.8 = 1.46 > 1.2 OK

(B) Percolation length Calculations-

Critical gradient for fine gravel = 0.25
Length of percolation required (L) = H = 2.0 = 8 m
i cr 0.25

Considering factor of safety to avoid piping below the weir

Required length of Rigid Apron = 2 x 8 = 16 m
Total = 18 m will be provided
Length of weir section =9m
Balance = 18 - 9 = 9 m
Hence 4.5m on u/s and d/s is provided

(C) Calculation of flexible Apron

Assumed grain size is 0.32mm,
Depth of scour as per Laceys equation
DLd = 1.34 (q2/ )1/3
= 1.76 d
Considering grain size of =0.32 mm
= 1.76 0.32 =1.76 x 0.56 = 1.0
q = v x h = 1.75 x 2.0 = 3.5 m3/s/m
Considering velocity =1.75 m/s
DLd= 1.34 (3.5) 2/3 = 2.31m
Provided 3.0 Length
