Lesson Idea Name: Life Cycle of a Plant

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of different living organisms.
b. Plan and carry out an investigation of the life cycle of a plant by growing a plant from a seed and by
recording changes over a period of time.

Technology Standard Addressed:

3. Knowledge Constructor Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct
knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

Lesson idea implementation:

As the standards are addressed, students will first watch the video of the life cycle of the seed growing into a
plant. They will fill out a graphic organizer including what happens first, second, third, and last in the video.
The video and graphic organizer will take about 10 minutes to complete. Once finished, students will begin to
plan their own life cycle of a plant by growing one from a seed. They will be provided a graph to record
changes over a period of time. Their graph will contain photos of the seedling as it transforms day by day. The
seedling should take approximately a week to sprout. Student learning will be assessed by a short quiz after
the planting of their seedlings. The final product will be used to inform students how a seed transforms into a
plant. To extend student learning to a higher level, students will take the photographs of their seedling and
post them to their page on the classroom blog. To conclude the lesson, students will measure each of their
plants and compare measurements. They will then graph the measurements of the whole classs plants.

Importance of technology:
Using a multimedia tool is critical to the project because it introduces the lesson as well as gets it beyond a
LoTi level 4. The lesson uses video to introduce the life cycle of a plant. The lesson also uses technology that
allows students to share progress of their seedling on the classroom blog, increasing this lesson to a LoTi level
5. Without technology, this project could be completed but it would not be nearly as interactive or fun for the
students.

Students safety is the number one concern of teachers at school, especially when students are using the
internet. Since students will only be posting photos the classroom blog, safety should not be too much of a
concern. Teachers should comply with the FERPA and CIPA policies put in place by Cobb County. In addition,
teachers should monitor students while they are using the computers.
