Documentary Outline

A. Topic

Can the benefits of genetically modified foods change or support someones ethical

standpoint on the matter?

B. Intro

Can the benefits of genetically modified foods change or support someones ethical

standpoint on the matter? To try and answer this question I collected data from

scholarly articles and journals. This information ranged from going in to the science

behind genetically modifying foods to the regulations and test that genetically

modified foods go through before they are deemed safe for public consumptions.

C. Position/Claim

The benefits that come with genetically modifying foods out way the risks.

D. Opposing point of view

Not enough is none about the affects of genetically modified foods to be available to

the public

E. 1st reason this topic is important

Genetically modifying foods has the ability to feed thousands of people in

developing countries.
F. 2nd reason this topic is important

Genetically modified foods can be modified to be more nutritious and more

resistant to viruses and easier to grow in harsh conditions

G. What can/should be done? (Advocacy/Purpose)

People should become more educated on the subject of genetically modified foods

in order to make an informed decision on whether to support or be against

genetically modified foods. If everyone knew the testing that genetically modified

foods went though before being approved for distribution and the benefits that they

have the ability to provide, they may be more open to accepting them.

H. Conclusion

By informing people about the benefits and regulations of genetically modified

foods, giving them the ability to make an informed decision, they may be more open

to the idea of genetically modified foods. By getting more people to support

genetically modified foods, the speed at which genetically modified foods advance

would increase which could in turn benefit thousand of more people suffering from

food shortages or malnutrition.

Nice job, Jacob. You'll want to make sure that you identify the most obvious opposing
claim - that use of GM foods is dangerous. It's true that some opponents
of GMFs believe we should know more, but that is an argument based on the larger
argument of "danger."
You'll also need to be sure that you explain E and F in more detail. For example, HOW
can GMFs feed more people? Where is this already happening? With which kinds of
food?

I believe that the benefits of genetically modified foods out way the risks and that once

people learned about all the benefits, it would change their stance on genetically modified

foods if they were against them. To try and persuade people into accepting the use of

genetically modified foods I gathered information from videos and different articles

explaining what benefits can come from genetically modifying foods and the regulations that

genetically modified foods go though before become available to the public. One video that I

found to be very persuading was called The case for engineering our food. In this video, the

speaker Pamela Ronald, touches on many of the benefits of engineering foods. (Insert The

case for engineering our food 1:20-2:00.)

Many of the foods we enjoy today wouldnt even be editable if it werent for genetic

modification. She then goes on to explain how plant genetists have been able to modify rice

to be more resistant to deceases and flooding.

She then goes on to explain that to try and combat this growing problem, farmer have started

planting rice that have these resistant genes. Another video that I came across talked about

golden rice. This is a rice that has been genetically modified to produce beta carotene in

order fight the problem of malnutrition around the world.

Many people are against the use of genetically modified foods because they believe that there

are underlying or unknown risk associated with genetically modified foods. What they might

not know is that geneticist are not just pumping out genetically modified foods into the

public. There are strict regulations and tests that they must go through before being approved

for public consumption. There have been claims that genetically modified foods can be

harmful to humans such as supposedly causing organ failure but I wasnt able to find any

scholarly articles supporting this claim.

the benefits of genetically modified foods and how they can be modified to make food more

sustainable in less than ideal conditions or make food more nutritious, or make foods less

susceptible to disease that are caused by fungi, bacteria, and even viruses, are just a few of the

reasons why the benefits out way the risks of not knowing enough about GMOs. By genetically

modifying foods it would make them easier to grow which would increase the abundance, which

could have a positive effect on 3rd would hunger. Genetically modified foods can create a

sustainable way to feed the world which is why it can be so beneficial.
