Unit Paper #5

Structure and systems are connected to art in several ways in which can be interpreted

differently by each individual. Through systems and structures, art is a reflection of culture,

respects, and boundaries. The big idea of these structures and systems is to relate the students

art making and their ability to follow instruction and use their own interpretation to complete and

create a work of art. Students interpretation is an essential role in the art making process whether

it is the work being produced or after the art is completed (Walker, 2001). According to Eisner

(2002), through arts celebrate multiple perspectives. One of their large lessons is that there are

many ways to see and interpret the world (p. 29). This strategy is teaching students that there is

not just one way to solve a problem, but to rather look at the structures and systems in the form

of play and apply their problem solving skills to explore the different works along with

problems.

The approach of structures and systems, will be integrated in my classroom of the grade

level two by looking at things in multiple ways or perspectives. I believe that by applying this

approach, it will allow the students to view it in several ways, including how to assess a piece or

a problem. An example can be by using modeling clay in order to construct a piece in which will

be a symbol of their culture. I can also ask them after the activity, what it means to them and the

importance it has within their culture. In addition, the students will be able to apply their
previous knowledge in order to to interpret and make connections to the new class material at

their own pace. I will also incorporate the idea of self reflection and interpretation because the

students should be given the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned or accomplished in

art or in any other subject.
