Civil Engineering Statistics BFC 34303 Individual Assignment 2

Instructions

Please answer all the following questions/tasks based on what you have learned from the online module
of Chapter 5. Submit this individual assignment by 3rd December 2017 (Sunday) to me in a form of
hardcopy (either by hand writing or computer typing).

Part A: Theoretical part

(1) In your own words, explain what do you understand by the concept of sampling distribution?
(2) In your own words, explain what do you understand by the sampling distribution of a sample
mean?
(3) In your own words, explain the Central Limit Theorem.
(4) In your own words, describe the standard error of the mean.
(5) Differentiate the concept and function of t-distribution, distribution, and F distribution.
(6) In your own words, explain what do you understand by the point estimation.
(7) In your own words, explain what do you understand by the confidence intervals.
(8) In your own words, explain what do you understand by the margin of error.

Part B: Application part

(9) If a gallon (3.79-litre) can of paint covers on the average 47.69 m2 with a standard deviation of
2.93 m2, what is the probability that the sample mean area covered by a sample of 40 of these
gallon (3.79-litre) cans will be anywhere from 47.38 to 48.31 m2? Use the central limit theorem
to calculate the probability of paint coverage and illustrate the areas in a form of normal
distribution graph.
(10)Two groups of Civil Engineering students, Section 1 and Section 2 participated in a paper plane
throwing competition. The results of throwing distance for Section 1 and Section 2 are normally
distributed with (3.77, 1.672 ) and (4.57, 2.732 ) respectively. Two samples of size 9 and 12
are randomly selected from Section 1 and Section 2 respectively. Find the probability that the
mean of Section 2 is lower than the mean of Section 1, and illustrate the areas in a form of
normal distribution graph.
(11)What is the area to the right of 2.08 under a t-distribution with 21 degrees of freedom? Assist
your answer with the help of t-distribution graph.
(12)What is the area to the right of 3.07 under a 2 distribution with 6 degrees of freedom? Assist
your answer with the help of 2 distribution graph.
(13) If 12 and 22 are the variances of independent random samples of size, 1 = 9 and 2 = 13
2
from normal population with equal variances, find (12 < 4.50).

(14) An industrial engineer intends to use the mean of a random sample of size = 150 to estimate
the average mechanical aptitude (as measured by a certain test) of assembly line workers in a
large industry. If, on the basis of experience, the engineer can assume that = 6.2 for such
data, what can he assert with probability 0.99 about the maximum size of his error (or margin of
error)?
(15) Based on the nanopillar height data (not shown here) with sample size of 50, an engineer has
calculated that the average nanopillar height of the sample is 305.58 nm and with standard
deviation of 36.97 nm. Construct a 99% confidence interval for the population mean of all
nanopillars.
(16) The mean weight loss of = 16 grinding balls after a certain length of time in mill slurry is 3.42
grams with a standard deviation of 0.68 gram. Construct 99% confidence interval for the true
mean weight loss of such grinding balls under the stated conditions.
