Garage Gallery

Garage Gallery project took place in July 2016 as

part of my graduation project from Bezalel
Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem

Alina Yavtushenko - curator, art school graduator

Assa Bigger - producer, art consultant
Salman Mordi - garage owner, handyman

1
Inspiration
The idea of taking the Garage as the location for
my final project fell apart with the support of
Assa Bigger, the entrepreneur and the friend of
the my husband Salman Mordi, the garage owner.
Assa suggested to organise events in the garage
and to invite people to get there. To his opinion,
this place possessed the special atmosphere and
coolness, besides the fact that a lot of clients
from around Israel bring their off-road cars to
be fixed there.

I loved the idea of involving people and

participants into my final project. The decision
was to create the art space as the subject of my
work and to display it as projection on the wall.
For this reason I had to collaborate with other
artists inviting them to build up the exposition
for the garage that would have been projected
into the walls of Bezalel art academy.

Relocating the final project from the academy

into a brutal and true-to-life workshop sounded
as a bold and risky concept. At the same time I
was ambitious and motivated to face it as the
real job that I would be able to deal with
further after graduation.

Curatorial agenda

Hiring the artists was challenging as I was

looking for young artists, art school graduates
of different origins to exhibit in the garage and
to approach the topic - The Road Life.

This title reflected the location matter - the

car repair workshop; as well as addressed the way
the project was held: simultaneously in two
places.
.
Another important issue was the physical
location of the garage in Tira, which is arabic-
israeli town in the central district of Israel.
Garage in Tira is somewhat speaking by itself
in context of israeli society, associating with
common beliefs about arabic towns inside Israeli
border.

Curatorial agenda

Road Life was once a romantic symbol of hippies

lifestyle. But nowadays this term would rather
have a negative connotation of the time wasted on
getting from point A to point B.

Since traffic is the essential issue for

contemporary cities, it is much more fair to count
on technology and to transit any sort of data in
seconds instead of physically moving from place
to place.

Bezalel Exposition
While the body of work is presented in the
garage and consists of installations of 7 artists,
the face of the project is its projection indoors

The topic of Surveillance is very sharp in
contemporary society, especially in Israel. Jerusalem 07/2016

The grid of CCTV monitoring is a common thing

that draws a notice everyday at the entrance to
any building as well as in the news or in social
media.
In addition to this the video recording from
CCTV cameras associates with watching
committed crimes.

Within my Bezalel exposition I decided to

introduce the real person who performs the
process of monitoring symbolising the unknown
watcher behind Surveillance cameras.

As it comes by expectation he was quickly Georgian sculptor George Tsuladze

Quote

In the permanent so-called war on terrorism

one may ask how extensively the camera will
oppress its users, not only by myriad images of
destruction throughout the world to which we
are immediately privy but also by a continuous
and increasingly omnipresent surveillance.

Artist statement

There are two expositions of one project, which

are connected through the network and one of
them refers to another. The indirect
correlation between these two parts of one
thing is the major concern of my work:
when looking for the real thing does it matters
whats happening apart from what is transferred
and uploaded?

While the original artworks made by artists are

located in the garage, the main conceptual part
of the project is in the different place, within
the white walls of the academy. The digital
projection that is presented to wider audience
shares the concept, selling the idea of real
exhibition in the garage without the Garage exhibition as seen through grid of 6 CCTV cameras
possibility to touch, look into the detail or to
get emotional impact.

The split between the body of work and its face

should provoke discussion about principal
aspects of the art practice today, as the
original is no longer a big deal and the data
transfer rate lets you know most of things
without leaving the screen of the computer.

Where is the context of the art discourse now?

What is the criteria for exhibiting art if there
are so many new emerging ways to show off and to
assemble. Finally what is the lifetime of the
artwork and how does it meet its target
audience?
