Autism Council of Utah

In todays society there has been an increase of children in the spectrum of Autism and having

two children in the spectrum of autism helps me to have a desire to know more on the subject. Because

I have two children in the Spectrum of autism I get concerned with the relationship that my children are

going to have when they get older, in the same token I get worried because I have a child that is seven

months old. I get concern regarding my baby. Does she have autism? How early can that be detected?

Do I want to know? How accurate will it be? What if she is misdiagnosed? I have read many articles that

have to explain different aspects on the topic of autism. I have read a couple of articles of early

detection and with the Organization of Autism Council of Utah, they have a free Infant research

opportunity for detection of autism with infants between the ages of 5-12 months. This is incredible,

this could not have come at a perfect time.

The organization in which Im writing about is www.autismcouncilofutah.org. According to the

Autism Council of Utah (ACU), they believe in the organization because The Autism Council of Utah

(ACU) is an independent

council working to foster

collaboration, communication,

and learning among families

and agencies. (their) aim is to

promote access to resources

and responsible information

for individuals of all ages who

have or are affected by

autism, or related conditions.

The Council will accomplish this by supporting statewide partnerships to collaborate on special projects,

research, and training. To give you an idea of the deferent spectrums on autism I when online to find

information that can provide the full picture, and this is what I found. As you can see the spectrum

covers four areas that branch of the autism spectrum needs like the needs of having interventions,

therapies, treatment, and other needs.

The four areas in the spectrum that I want to mention are Communication skills, sensory,

behaviors, social skills, and class skills. As you can see the spectrum covers lots of ground. Because the

spectrum is so wide in a rage of the severity of every child the ACU organization works with parents,

agencies, and many professionals across the state of Utah. An example of that initiative to help parents

find the support in diagnosing infants the University of BYU is working with the organization to conduct

research on infants that have siblings in the spectrum of autism. The event Infant Research Opportunity

at BYU will be on August 12, 2017 @ 8:00 AM - January 26, 2018, @ 5:00 PM. In this Infant Research

Opportunity at BYU (they) are looking for infants between 5-12 months old?... (they) are especially

looking for infants who have siblings who have been diagnosed with ASD. Others are also

welcome...Families will be paid $10 for participation (about 30 minutes If interested. The interest and

initiative to help families and local communities in the state of Utah come from the ACU organization to

help many communities at a time to provide more support to the needs of the children of tomorrow.

There are many parents that get worried about their children being misdiagnosed while they are

infants. Lisa Evans writes information and studies that have been done to come to a conclusion that

because of the increase of Misdiagnosis in Autism and ADHD. Lisa explains that in some studies children

that have been diagnosed during childhood have no disability at age 20. The article Autism, ADHD

Misdiagnosis by Lisa Evans said that According to 2012 report from the National Epidemiologic

Database for the Study of Autism, autism rates have increased from 39 to 204 percent in various parts of

Canada, including southeastern Ontario. Cases of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have also risen.

According to the American Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 11 percent of

children between the ages of four and 17 were diagnosed with ADHD in 2011; an increase of 7.8 percent

in 2003. I have seen that one of my children has improved so much that if I was to diagnose he would

not be as severe as he was at the age of 5. There are many struggles that affect the lives of these

children like at home, at church, and or school.

The children in the classroom with autism. There are many challenges that take place. When

looking at the illustration above you can see the that there two aspects that affect the children with

autism. The para is not someone who's there to help a child understand how to interpret the

environment so he doesn't get upset," she said recently. "The para is there to keep him out of trouble,

so they'll allow him to continue in that classroom." (by Kate Taylor, Making Room in Class for Children

with Autism to Blossom). There are interventions that need additional help in the classroom. Special

Education also is known as the Individual Evaluation Program (IEP). This program in the state of Utah

helps students to stay out of trouble and learn in the process. The help varies from school to school. In

some schools, it's more involved than others. For a child to progress in school and at home is to work

together with the child and the needs that may exist in the classroom. A good example of the things that

the IEP does is to have Some students had pedals, like bicycles, under their desks to allow those who

need to fidget to pedal their feet while they worked. I have personally seen my child have sensory

items to keep my child on task with the class. My son used a stress ball to keep him occupied during

lectures from the teachers, other times he has the support group come in to help the teacher read to

the class without an outburst of sounds from the autistic children.
