IV. Procedure

A. Activity:

Drawing and Labeling of the Cartesian Plane

Procedure:
1. Choose a partner. Each pair will be given 1 graphing paper.
2. Fold your graphing paper into halves and then fold it again to create 4
sections.
3. Trace the crease of the paper to construct two real number lines
perpendicular to each other at the 0 point of each line. Label this point of
intersection as O for origin.
4. The horizontal line is called the x-axis. The vertical number line is called the
y-axis. Put an arrowhead at the ends.
5. Label each quadrant I, II, III, and IV
6. Label the grids on both axes to create a 1-1 mapping between the points in
the plane and ordered pairs of real numbers (x,y). The first number x is called
 x coordinate or abscissa and the second number y is called y-coordinate or
ordinate.
7. Congratulations! You have already made a Cartesian Coordinate Plane.

B. Analysis

Why do you think is the purpose of doing this activity?

To find the coordinates of a point
Why do I have to put arrowheads at the ends?
To indicate the infinity of the set of real numbers.
Why is it called an ordered pair?
Because of the order of how it is written. X first then Y.

To find the coordinates of a point:

1. Draw a line from the point perpendicular to the x-axis.
The point where the line intersects the x-axis is the x-coordinate.
2. Draw a line from the point perpendicular to the y-axis.
The point where the line intersects the y-axis is the y-coordinate.
