Ms. Van De Moeres Philosophy of Education

I believe the students are our future. As an educator, I want to provide the skills and

resources my students will need to be successful. I will accomplish this by implementing a

positive and supportive classroom environment that will help to motivate the students without

pressure, having my students actively engaged in course content using various techniques, and

attending to each individual students learning needs towards growth.

My personal goal for my classroom is to establish a warm, comfortable, supportive atmosphere. I

will design my classroom, so students have partners and can exchange their understanding of the

course content; this will assist them in developing social skills as well as strengthen the students

grasp on the curriculums subject matter.

I consider active participation in the classroom to be crucial to student success. Having active

participation within the class will lead to growth towards becoming an empowered learner. I will

view students as empowered Learners and provide them with skills, such as:

How to set goals

How to evaluate one selfs strengths and weaknesses.

How to take beneficial notes

How to express ones feelings

These skills inspire students to think on a deeper level, and explore outside the classroom for

real-world examples that connects to their learning and goals.

I believe that every student learns differently; because of this, I plan on incorporating useful

techniques within the lesson for a more well-rounded educational experience. These techniques
Van De Moere 4

could include, but are not limited to: visual aids (such as interesting videos), real-world examples

to provide relevance, and one-on-one Q & A that will give me an understanding of where the

individual stands compared to the rest of the class and where they need improvement.

It is my belief that for me to be a successful educator, I will need to focus on the individual needs

of my students as well as maintaining a positive and supportive environment for the students to

feel comfortable enough to express their ideas and questions. Keeping up on modern day

teaching techniques will also contribute toward more effective learning exercises for the

students.

CLASSROOM RULES, CONSEQUENCES AND PROCEDURES:

Classroom Rules/ Consequences:

I am fostering a warm, comfortable, supportive learning environment with every rule on

the list. Respect enables students to feel comfortable with participation and being who they are
Van De Moere 5

thus, producing a warm environment. Participation supports students that need hands on

learning, while also supporting growth in public speaking. Staying on task supports student

growth in patience and allows the teacher a chance to aid students who struggle. Follow

directions supports student learning by teaching time management skills and preparing students

for real world obstacles. Believe in yourself promotes self-respect allowing students to feel

comfortable taking on new challenges; this rule also aids in encouraging diverse learners to

preserver. Have fun establishes a warm and comfortable classroom where students will learn and

enjoy themselves while doing it; it will aid diverse learners by making subject matter more

interesting. Lastly, take ownership of actions creates a comfortable environment through stability

which leads into consequences.

Verbal warnings act as student exposure to consequences and support student learning in this

area; diverse learners will benefit from these in culmination of other consequences. The

consequence loss of bathroom/water is for when a student abuses the bathroom/water privilege;

this consequence supports student awareness of actions promoting rule #5. The consequence

receive negative is for a minor offense after a verbal warning has been given; the 5 negatives

concept supports a comfortable environment where the students dont feel threatened making

mistakes. Teachers choice allows the teacher to soften or strengthen the consequence depending

on the offense; this will either: support the student in showing them an understanding and warm

environment, or create a safe and comfortable environment for the rest of the students if the

offense was extreme, resulting in a referral and or buddy room/ detention for the offending

student. Referrals and buddy room/ detention are for students to understand there are limits to

breaking the rules and engaging in misconduct they again support the other students in ensuring

a comfortable, supportive and warm environment.

Van De Moere 6

Step ups support the rules which uphold my philosophy; an example would be when a student

reaches 5 negatives, if they are at a verbal warning they will jump to loss of bathroom/water or

referral depending on the offense.

Consequences every week; negatives every day

Classroom Layout:

Background information: The Future district will provide laptops to the students and teachers.

My future classroom: I want to keep my area simple and organized so I decided all I need is one

book shelf to add resourceful books and some personal items such as pictures. I also would want

printer in my classroom; it will be helpful for all the project the students will be doing

throughout the year. The student center table is where students can find missing assignments,

grab a tissue, sharpen their pencil and turn-in work. In the top right-hand corner, is the creative

center; The creative center consists of three whiteboards along the walls, a low table where

students can seat on the floor or pillows and work together on task, (problems or share creative

ideas with each other) on the shelf holds a bunch of art supplies, such as; compasses, rulers,

blocks, color pencils, markers, colored paper and scissors. In the front left corner, is the

students computer charging station where every night students will store their laptops. I have a

small group table in the back of the room, for pulling groups during individual practice time.

Students will seat in pairs at the desk that are in rows. Doug Lemov states I am a big fan of

rows ..This layout socializes students to attend to the board and the teacher as their primary

focus. Another reason why the students would be in pairs is to practice having intelligent

conversations about the lesson; think-pair-share, think-write-share and quiz-quiz-trade (Katie

Cartier) . On the left wall will be a bulletin board that displays the students work throughout the

year. In, the front of the room will be a smart board and projector, the smart board will come in
Van De Moere 10

handy with hands on activities we do class and the projector will be helpful when teaching the

lesson. Storage is important to have and in my classroom, I will have two storage units and three

bookshelves, each storage unit will have white boards as its doors, that way students can work

out problems anywhere in the classroom.
