Subject: iFixit Project Evaluation Memo

Date: November 6, 2017

The purpose of this evaluation memo is to identify all the work our group has completed for the
iFixit project.

Completed Steps and Unusual Elements

As of now, we have completed the troubleshooting page, device page, and 5 repair guides. We
have completed the charger repair guide, the filter replacement guide, the brush roll replacement
guide, battery replacement guide, and the button replacement guide. The five guides have a total
of 16 steps. We have had a lot of unusual elements. A lot of our problems revolved around our
computer problems, which involved WIFI problems and troubleshooting problems. We would
inform each other about the problem and somebody else would volunteer to complete the
portion. Lastly we encountered a problem very close to the due date of our project, which was
finding out that our vacuum was missing a belt and one of our guides was meant for the belt. We
emailed Dr. Bruce and she reminded us that if we had 25 steps with all the guides we would be
excused, if not we had to think quick on what other guide we could do. Our guides do not have
enough steps to be excused so we decided to go with another guide. Dr. Bruce was very
supportive and willing to help us in any way possible.

Group Evaluation

Our group struggled to find a day where we could meet up to take the pictures. Most of our
meetings were during the weekends and one on a Wednesday. We planned our meetings a couple
of days in advance to pick a day where everybody is available. On average our meetings were an
hour to an hour and a half. We mostly did our work on Google Drive or on the iFixit website. We
would inform each other when one of us was working on the page so that the other members
would not interfere with each others work. We communicated through texts the same week an
assignment was due. We did not give out strikes. We completed the work on time or ahead of
time. Our strengths were getting the camera ahead of time and being prepared to complete the
guides and pages.
Contribution

Val would remind us when something was due and would ask us about the progress we were
making. If a person was not able to complete a task she would finish it. Ben would start the page
and let us know when to start. Along with Val, he was in charge of taking the photos and some
lighting. Jasmine was in charge of research and writing down the steps for the guides. She was
also in charge of bringing the white poster boards and the lighting.

Future Preparation

The iFixit project taught our team that sometimes things do not go as we wish, one of our
setbacks was when we have had to retake pictures and felt that a day was wasted. But we learned
how to handle it appropriately without making it a bigger deal than what it was. We had to sit
down and evaluate when we could all meet up together to fix our mistakes, without pointing
fingers or putting all the work on anybody. We learned that by working as a team, the workload
would feel lighter and it did. We each took initiative in different areas to get our group work
started, and this helped the process of completing tasks go much smoother. We set up deadlines
to help us make sure that we got our tasks done by the due date. Communication was a big part
of this, our team stayed connected through our methods of reach and would respond in
appropriate time so it would not affect out project. We all had to sacrifice time and get out of our
comfort zone to create a project that we would all be happy with. We helped each other by
looking over our work and making any corrections that needed to be done to better the project,
we all accepted the help with no hesitation. Ultimately, this project taught us how to work as a
team and go beyond our abilities even when it feels like the finish line is coming sooner than
expected.

Making the iFixit Project Better

Dr. Bruce was helpful with guiding us on what she and iFixit expected of us, she made sure to
inform us what she would be looking for and some tips on what iFixit would be looking for. She
made it clear that we could go to her or iFixit for any concerns that could come up in the process
of our project. When we had our first group conference she helped us with some of the wording
in our first guide, this was a great way to refresh what we have been learning in class.

The iFixit team provided us with some useful tools to help us with our project, but we would
recommend on supplying a couple more tools for bigger objects like our vacuum. We were able
to unscrew some of the screws but some we had trouble with and had to ask one of our parents
for their tools. Besides that they did give us very helpful recommendations on our assignments,
the advice was clear and easy to apply to our tasks. Our team was a little on edge about our
pictures because we have such a large object but iFixit actually accepted our pictures. Dr. Bruce
actually asked our team if iFixit said anything about our pictures, we informed her that they did
not so she was okay with that too. Even though we came across some challenges, competing this
project has been a pleasant experience and we are glad that we were put together as a team.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Hello iFixit team,

Abstract
The CSUFixers will write a troubleshooting and repair manual for the Bissell BOLT ion 2-in-1.
There are currently no guides for the vacuum, so we intend to reduce the amount of vacuums that
are thrown away.

Introduction
For our Technical Writing Project, we have been allocated a Bissell BOLT ion 2-in-1
Lightweight Cordless Vacuum. At the moment there is no repair documentation for this model
vacuum on iFixit. What we did come across on the internet was a repair guide filled with
different types of malfunctions for this type of vacuum model. We can predict that many
customers that have bought this product may be experiencing some of the complications. With
the help of this PDF guide and additional repair information on the web, we feel that we could
help simplify and clarify steps for the public eye. Along with providing a variety of guides that
will be distinctly written and easy for the global community to take advantage of, especially for
those who are not tech savy.
We propose the following page titles for our troubleshooting page and device page:

Troubleshooting Page: Bissell BOLT ion 2-in-1 Troubleshooting

Device Page: Bissell BOLT ion 2-in-1

Through our research, weve found several problems that users face with the Bissell BOLT ion,
and wed like to tackle the following topics on our Troubleshooting page:
Vacuum will not turn on
Vacuum has low suction
Visible dirt escaping from vacuum
Vacuum wont charge
Need to replace belt

Our team will shoot our repair guides with a Samsung WB 250 F Digital Camera. The plan is to
create replacement guides for the following topics below:
Belt
Filter
Crevice tool with dusting brush
Stair and upholstery tool
Charging base

We plan to have the milestones completed by a set date, which follows:

Milestone 1: Troubleshooting Page October 9
Milestone 2: Device Page October 11
Milestone 3: One Complete Guide October 25
Milestone 4: Project Folder November 9

Thank you for taking into consideration our proposal. We are eager to work along with the iFixit
team, we presume our team has the abilities to provide high-quality guides that meet the
standards your global community depends on. We would appreciate if you could please let us
know if we may proceed, or if there is any changes we should make before we start with our
guides.
Sincerely,
Valeria S., Jasmine S., and Ben B. CSUF-BRUCE-F17S1G3
