Grant us empowerment, bestow your blessings!

tubwang gyalpo shaky tenpa la
During this time of the teachings of kyamuni, king of sages,

tay tulku drow pal du shar
Infinite nirmakya forms appear as the glory of beings,

mejung ngotsar tsen chok gy dangden
Including your eight supreme, most wondrous emanations.

Your nirmakya birthplace was in the west of India.

In Uiyna, on an isle in the middle of limpid Lake Koa,

You were born on the heart of a radiant lotus.

Urgyen, child of miraculous birthplace, I remember you now,



shyingkham khy pak urgyen podrang du
In the palace of that glorious pure realm,

You were adopted by King Indrabodhi2 as his longed-for son,

And established his subjects on the path to awakening.

Having abandoned the kingdom, you went to the charnel grounds

And brought the kins under control.

You performed the acts of tanagaa union and liberation.

Urgyen, incredible master of yogic discipline, I remember you now,

You were ordained a kya monk in the land of Zahor,

Adorned with pure discipline and the threefold training,

jampal shenyen lasok lama yi
You went before your gurus, Majurmitra and the rest,

chen ngar jn n drondok mal ch
And cut through presumptions and concepts directly.

tukdam shyalzik khyen nyi ngn du gyur
You beheld your yidam face to face the two wisdoms actualized.

sherab loden urgyen d dir dren
Urgyen, embodiment of wise intelligence, I remember you now,

yeshe khandro gelong kn gam
You were swallowed by Kngamo,4 the wisdom kin,

shyal du sol n sangw pemor tn
Passed through her body, emerging from her secret lotus,

chi nang sangw wang nam dzokpar kur
And received the outer, inner, and secret empowerments.

Urgyen, who perfectly matures and liberates, I remember you now,



lam lungten urgyen lasokp
In the sacred charnel grounds of Uiyna, and elsewhere,

durtr n su khandr jinlab n
As the prophecies foretold, the kins blessed you;

You attained supreme accomplishment and actualized awakening.

In the east, at Mratika, supreme sacred site,

Together with your consort, the princess Mandrav,

yabyum nyim ts yi ngdrub tob
You united inseparably and attained the accomplishment of longevity.

Urgyen, who is beyond birth and death, I remember you now,

When the king commanded that you be burnt alive,

You turned the flames into a lake and sat unharmed in its centre,

Serene upon a lotus, astounding all who beheld you.

Urgyen, master of subtle winds and mind, I remember you now,



urgyen khandr ling du chpa dz
Performing miracles in Uiyna, land of kins,

chuwo gyen dok nyima t la nen
You reversed a rivers flow and held back the sunrise.

dzutrul tak la chib n namkhar shek
You rode a magical tiger and flew through the sky.

drubtob gyalpo urgyen d dir dren
Urgyen, master, king of siddhas, I remember you now,

silwatsal du tulshyuk dzep ts
Practicing yogic discipline in the Cool Grove charnel ground,

chinang kasung tamch dam latak
You bound all the outer and inner protectors under oath,

jikten drekpa kn gyi soknying pul
And arrogant worldly spirits came and offered you their life force.

marung duldz urgyen d dir dren
Urgyen, tamer of malevolent forces, I remember you now,



nalendra ru ch kyi khorlo kor
At Nland, you turned the Wheel of Dharma

d dang mutek tamch tsarch n
And defeated the hosts of heretics and demons,

shyid lam la k n shakya yi
Establishing them all on the path of peace and happiness.

At Yanglesh, you opened the Gathering of Sugatas5 maala

Beheld the victorious hosts of the Peaceful and Wrathful.

The king asked you to come to Tibet,

Where you tamed arrogant spirits and built Samy'The Inconceivable'.

You lit the Dharma lamp of the great causal and resultant vehicles.

tidro drak dang chimpu lasokpar
At Tidro Drak,6 Chimpu,7 and various other places,

tsogyal yum dang sang ch dzep ts
When engaged in secret practice with the Lady Tsogyal

nyengy ku sung tuk kyi sang go ch
You opened the secret door of Body, Speech, and Mind according to the lineage of oral
instructions.

Urgyen, you who ripen and liberate disciples, I remember you now,

And now, in these final five hundred years of our kalpa,

Where you subdued the angry, red faced rkasas.

Having ripened and freed your disciples, you reside in Khecara, 8

Amid cloud-like gatherings of kins from throughout the three realms.

wangchen p'u lo treld ts chu dang
On the tenth day of the monkey month, in the mighty monkey year,

d kyi gyalpo ts chu tamch la
And on every tenth day, the sovereign of occasions,

ku sung tuk kyi trulpa natsok kyi
Your various emanations of awakened Body, Speech, and Mind

Sustain those with faithUrgyen, I remember you now,

Throughout this universe of a billion worlds

urgyen pema jewa trak gy ku
There are a billion forms of Urgyen Padma,

gang la gang dul d la der tnp
Taming and teaching each according to their need.

Urgyen, you who extend benefit to beings, I remember you now,

Within the single form of the guru, Urgyen Padma,

d sum sangye kn gyi kpa dzok
All the buddhas of the three times are perfectly present,

As the essence-kya of the great Vajradhara.

Urgyen, supreme chief of all buddhas' heirs, I remember you now,

Precious Urgyen, protector of beings,

shyingkham n chok gang na shyuk gyur kyang
No matter the supreme realm in which you reside,

With the swift hook of your compassion,,

Rescue us now, your hapless disciples,

khorw chuwo ch la dral n kyang
From the vast churning river of sasra,

urgyen khach n su drang du sol
And guide us to celestial Uiyna!

1. Guru Rinpoche is repeatedly evoked in this prayer by the name Urgyen (Tib. u rgyan), which is also
the name of his home country. For poetic consideration we chose to give his name both in Tibetan
(Urgyen) and Sanskrit (Uiyna).
2. Another name for King Indrabhti.
3. These are the six pramits of 1. generosity, 2. discipline, 3. patience, 4. diligence, 5. meditative
concentration, 6. insight, plus 7. skilful means, 8. strength, 9. aspiration prayers and 10. wisdom.

Khandro Leki Wangmo.
5. The Kagy Deshek Dpa, The Gathering of Sugatas (Tib. bka' brgyad bde gshegs 'dus pa) is a terma-
treasure cycle revealed by Nyangrel Nyima zer, focusing on the Kagy. It was revealed at Sinmo Parje
Rock in Lhodrak, along with three statues of the Kagy, of different sizes.
6. The cave at Tidr Drak, or Shyot Tidr also known as Kiri Yongdzong, is one of the retreat places
where Guru Rinpoche stayed long-term with Yeshe Tsogyal. It is situated high in the cliffs of a pair of
mountains with hot springs, at an altitude of 5,400m. It was here that Guru Rinpoche later transmitted
the entire ''Dzogchen ''teachings, the ''Innermost, Unsurpassed Cycle of the Category of Pith
Instructions'', and the ''Khandro Nyingtik'' to a hundred thousand wisdom kins and a single human
disciple, Yesh Tsogyal.
7. The caves at Chimphu represent Guru Rinpoches enlightened speech. He spent long periods there in
retreat. The caves are located at the head of the valley that runs parallel and to the northeast of the
Samy Valley, about 13 km from Samy.
8. Khecara (Tib. mkha spyod) is the name of the pure realm of Vajravrh.
