HISTORY
St. Lukes was established in 1903 by American Episcopalian missionaries as a charity ward
and dispensary hospital. St. Luke's started out as fully free outpatient clinic for the poor in Calle
Magdalena, Tondo. It also supports and conducts medical, dental and surgical missions in rural areas. It
was transformed into an independent, non-sectarian, non-stock, non-profit corporation in the 1970s
St. Lukes-Global City and Quezon City are both certified by Germany-based accrediting organization
Temos, making St. Lukes the first in the Philippines to have been awarded certificates for Excellence in
Medical Tourism and Quality in International Patient Care. St. Lukes hospitals are two of only ten
hospitals worldwide recognized as prime medical tourism destinations.
Temos certifies and accredits hospitals and primary care facilities worldwide based on adherence to
international Quality Management Systems standards and compliance with its stringent and
comprehensive criteria.
Investors in People
St. Lukes Medical Center is the first hospital in the world to be awarded a Gold Certification by Investors
in People according to its Sixth Generation Standard. The institution was given this certification due to
its high standards of leadership and people management practice, continuous improvement, and unity
among its members towards achieving its corporate goals.
St. Lukes Medical Center is the first hospital in the Philippines to be granted the Hazard Analysis Critical
Control Point (HACCP) certification by SGS Philippines, Inc. the countrys leading provider in
certification, testing, verification and inspection. A HACCP Certification signifies that the hospital
provides patients with the highest standard of safe and healthy foods.
St. Lukes Medical Center is the first hospital in the Philippines and the fourth outside the United States
to become a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a network of independent health care providers
committed to working together to benefit patients and their families.
As a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, St. Lukes will work with Mayo Clinic to share medical
knowledge and clinical expertise. With this collaboration, St. Lukes reaffirms its leadership role in
Philippine health care with the ultimate goal of providing the highest level of care for its patients.

HOSPITAL CLASSIFICATION
According to Ownership:
Private- owned, established and operated with funds through donation, principal, investment or other means by any individual,
corporation, association or organization. A private health facility may be a single proprietorship, partnership, corporation, cooperative,
foundation, religious, non-government organization and others.
General a Hospital that provides services for all kinds of illnesses, disease, injuries or deformities. A general hospital shall provide
medical and surgical care to the sick and injured, maternity, newborn and child care. It shall be equipped with the service capabilities needed to
support board certified/eligible medical specialists and other licensed physicians rendering services in, but not limited to the following:
a. Clinical Services
1. Family Medicine
2. Pediatrics
3. Internal Medicine
4. Obstetrics and Gynecology
5. Surgery
b. Emergency
c. Outpatient Services
d. Ancillary and Support services such as, clinical laboratory, imaging facility and pharmacy
Level 3
A level 3 hospital shall have as minimum, all of level 2 capacity, including, but not limited to the following:
1. Teaching and/or training hospital with accredited residency training program for physicians in the four (4) major specialties namely:
Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Surgery.
2. Provision for physical medicine and rehabilitation unit;
3. Provision for ambulatory surgical clinic;
4. Provision for dialysis facility
5. Provision for blood bank
6. A DOH licensed tertiary clinical laboratory with standard equipment/reagents/supplies necessary for the performance of
histopathology examinations;
7. A DOH licensed level 3 imaging facility with interventional radiology.
