HERPES SIMPLEX GENITALIA
- Caused by infection with the herpes
simplex virus (HSV)
- Sexual contact is the primary way the
virus spreads.
- One of the oldest sexual transmitted
disease
TYPES OF HERPES
1. Type 1 (HSV-1) usual cause of
infections of the oral region and causes
cold sores (herpes labialis).
- It is commonly known as oral herpes.
- It is the most common type of herpes
- People who are infected with HSV-1
were infected during childhood or
adolescence from non-sexual contact
with saliva
2. Type 2 (HSV-2) associated with
anogenital infection (penis, anus,
vagina).

genital infection but HSV-1 has

- Commonly known as genital herpes.
- The two types of herpes can be
interconnected with one another
through oral sex or auto-inoculation.
CAUSES OF HERPES SIMPLEX GENITALIA

through contact with toilets, towels or
other objects used by an infected
person.
Having unprotected vaginal or anal sex

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

DIAGNOSIS FOR HERPES SIMPLEX GENITALIA
PCR blood test: The PCR blood test can
tell if you have genital herpes even if
you don't have symptoms. The PCR test
looks for pieces of the virus's DNA. This
is the most common test used to
diagnose genital herpes and is very
accurate.
Cell culture: During the exam,
your health care provider can take a
sample of cells from a sore and look for
the herpes simplex virus (HSV) under a
microscope.

PREVENTION
Taking painkillers, such as
acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Bathing in lightly salted water helps
relieve symptoms
Soaking in a warm sitz bath
Applying petroleum jelly to the affected
area
Avoiding tight clothing around the
affected area
Washing hands thoroughly, especially
after touching the affected area
Refraining from sexual activity until
symptoms have gone
If urinating is painful, apply some cream
or lotion to the urethra, for example,
lidocaine
Ice packs *never apply ice directly to
the skin, always wrap it in a cloth or
towel first*
