Before I begin to talk about slavery, I just want to mention the fact that even

though we had slaves in the western part of the world it was not new to the world.

The following are examples of countries that had slavery, Africa, south America, US,

Europe, and much more. When it comes to the south of the states Southerners had

to justify the systems of slavery in a country that talked about liberty all the time, and

they developed a number of different kinds of defenses. Probably the most prominent

one was simply racism. During the time of the planters paternalism the southern

whites would take the initiative to have to deal with the slaves by having to feed them,

disciplining them, and even having the need to change their Christian morality. For

the slaves this was a very difficult time in their lives. Having to deal with the fact that

they were personal property. The slaves took upon them the justification to act in

such a way that they would sabotage the tools needed to carry the jobs that the

slaves had. The example is given in the textbook, some slaves played into their

masters racist preconceptions by hiding their intelligence and feigning childishness

and ignorance. The slaves could then slow down the workday in small ways by

accidentally breaking tools (page 154) According to the text even slaves acted in

act of poisoning their masters little at a time.

There was much inequality for the slave women and children. The slave women

would be considered taking the role of caretakers and in many times the men would

treat them as property that they were at that time. At times the role of the women as

equal to the role of the men in the fields working and being part of the plantation. The

textbook explains that Nor did the slave womans role as

daughter, wife, or mother garner any patriarchal protection. Each of these roles and

the relationships they defined was subject to the prerogative of a master, who could

freely violate enslaved womens persons, sell off. As for the children in many times

it is explained that they would sell the children and families would separate in the

process of selling and buying slaves.

These slaves would sometimes go up

to six weeks without having contact with

their owners. This cheaper skilled labor

drove away skilled white workers who

could not feed their families while

competing with the lower wages. This is one of the concerns that people from the

north had with the south states, and the rebellion of the slaves.

one of the rebellions in 1831 led by Nat Turner. Turner being a slave himself

took up arms against the masters to be free. The reason for Turner's rebellion was

when his own wife and family was sold to slavery. Turner was inspired by the

Christian believes of Christ, that that like Christ, he should lay down his life to end

slavery. (page 152) Turner had the vision to help but in the process, he and about

seventy others ended up killing their masters and in return after being hanged and

spread the parts to different parts of the states sixty-five slaves were killed. Not the

outcome that was expected.

In conclusion, I have understood and imaging the struggles that many slaves

when through. I have also noticed that there where places in the south that slaves

were treated as a family except working for free and taking care of the needs of the

white homes. Despite the struggles of history it is important to never forget what

happened in the past but not to discourage us in the future with all of the changes.
