Technical Data & Safety Bulletin

Isopropyl Acetate (IPAc)

____________________________________________________________________________________________

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Isopropyl Acetate (IPAc) is a clear, colorless liquid is widely used as an industrial and
consumer based solvent. Isopropyl Acetate has a fruit-like odor.

IPAc exposure is possible in both industrial and consumer applications. Occupational exposure
limits have been established to control the allowable amount of exposure in workplace settings.

Consumer exposure, generally infrequent and short in duration, is also highly dependent upon
the conditions under which Isopropyl Acetate is used. See Health Information.

Isopropyl Acetate does not cause adverse health or environmental effects at levels typically
found in the workplace or in the environment.

PRODUCT USES

Isopropyl Acetate is used as a solvent in chemical processes, in coatings, inks, cleaners, cosmetics,
fragrances, insecticides and food flavorings.

Isopropyl Acetate occurs naturally in grape juice, apples and nectarines.

HEALTH INFORMATION

Isopropyl acetate exhibits low acute toxicity by inhalation, oral, and dermal routes.

Overexposure to isopropyl acetate may cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat. Severe
overexposure may cause weakness, drowsiness, and unconsciousness.

Isopropyl Acetate vapor concentrations of 200 ppm are irritating to the eyes, nose and throat.
The LC50 is ~12,000 ppm.

Isopropyl Acetate is not thought to be very toxic by ingestion. The LD50 is >6000 mg/kg.

Skin irritation is not expected. However, prolonged exposure to skin could result in irritation,
redness and discomfort.

No chronic systemic effects have been reported in humans.

People with chronic respiratory, skin, liver, or kidney diseases may be/ at increased risk from
isopropyl acetate.

POTENTIAL FOR EXPOSURE

There is a potential for occupational and consumer exposure through inhalation and skin contact
although exposures through inhalation are expected to be low due to the low vapor pressure.

Based on the uses for Isopropyl Acetate the public could be exposed through:

Workplace exposure This refers to potential exposure to IPAc in a manufacturing

facility or through evaporation in various industrial applications. Generally, exposure to
IPAc of personnel in manufacturing facilities is relatively low because the process,
storage and handling operations are enclosed. The US Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) to IPAc vapors is 250 parts per
million (ppm) per an 8-hour work day. The ACGIH has set a 100 ppm 8 hour
permissible exposure limit and 200 ppm short term exposure limit (15 minutes). OSHA
has set a 250 ppm 8 hour exposure limit.

Consumer use of products containing IPAc This category of exposure is highly

variable depending on the products used and the conditions under which they are used.
Exposure of the majority of consumers is through its use in cleaners, paints, inks.
Exposure to aerosols is possible as a result of industrial spraying with paints containing

Isopropyl Acetate. Indirect exposures via the environment (e.g. ingestion of surface
water contaminated with Isopropyl Acetate) are also possible.

Environmental releases Isopropyl Acetate can enter the environment as emissions from
its manufacture and use as a solvent. IPAc is suspected to readily biodegrade.

Chemical manufacturers are committed to operating in an environmentally responsible

manner everywhere business is done. Efforts are guided by in-depth scientific
understanding of the environmental impact of operations, as well as the social and
economic needs of the communities. Industrial spills or releases are rare; however a spill
may pose a significant flammability issue.

REGULATORY STATUS

Refer to the Safety Data Sheet for more specific information.

Isopropyl Acetate does not have a reportable quantity.

Isopropyl Acetate is not SARA Section 313 chemical.

Isopropyl Acetate is on the U.S. TSCA list and is included in the EEC's EINECS, Canadian
DSL, Australian and Japanese chemical inventories.

STORAGE AND HANDLING

General industry practice is to store Isopropyl Acetate in carbon steel vessels. Addition of water
can cause Isopropyl Acetate to break down into Isopropanol and Acetic Acid.

Isopropyl Acetate should be stored only in tightly closed, properly vented containers away from
heat, sparks, open flame or strong oxidizing agents.

Provided proper storage and handling precautions are taken, Isopropyl Acetate manufactured and
delivered by Monument Chemical is stable for at least 12 months from the date of manufacture.
Isopropyl Acetate that is subsequently repackaged, handled and/or delivered by third parties may
have a different shelf life and may require third party shelf life studies. Product past the retest
date should be evaluated to confirm that all specifications are within their limits before use.

Handle empty containers carefully. Flammable residue remains after emptying.

Undue exposure or spillage should be strictly avoided as a matter of good practice. Refer to the
Safety Data Sheet for more specific information.
