The house is crowded this night, and the fat manager who
meets them at the door beams from ear to ear with an oily 65
tremulous smile. He escorts them to their box with a sort of
pompous humility, waving his fat jewelled hands and talking
SCENE 2 at the top of his voice. Dorian loaths him more than ever.
Henry, upon the other hand, rather likes him. Basil amuses
himself with watching the faces in the pit. The youths in
the gallery have taken off their coats and waistcoats and
hung them over the side. They talked to each other across the
theatre and shared their oranges with the tawdry girls who

sat beside them. Some women are laughing in the pit.
