Research Method

The research study used descriptive method, the researchers made use of a

survey method to find out the effects of social networking sites to the academic

performance of the selected 2nd year BBTE students in PUP.

According to John Best, the descriptive method describes and interprets what

is. It is concerned with conditions of relationships that exist, practices that prevail, and

beliefs, processes that are going on, effects that are being felt or trends are

developing. It is also defined as purposive process of gathering, analyzing, classifying

and tabulating data about prevailing conditions, practices, beliefs, processes, trends

and cause and effect relationships and the making adequate and accurate

interpretation about such data or without the aid of statistical methods.

The researcher used the descriptive method because they typically look for a

clearer understanding on the effects of social networking sites in selected 2 nd year

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES
students of Bachelor in Business Teacher Education in the Polytechnic University of

the Philippines. The researcher obtained information about the effects of social

years old.

2. Respondents Profile in terms of General Weighted Average

The highest GWA acquired was 1.25 and above and has only .48%. 28

respondents have 1.26 to 2.00 GWA and is 13.46% of the total percentage of the

respondents while 2.01 to 3.00 GWA has 179 respondents and is 86.06%. It is also

had the most number of the respondents which was 179.

2. An overall mean of 4.03 for instant connection for class discussion was

observed with verbal interpretation of agree and the least mean was 3.43 for

Time spent most of the time in SNS for searching their lesson for positive effects.

Meanwhile in negative effects, an overall mean of 2.89 having poor eyesight was

observed with verbal interpretation of agree and the least mean was 2.29 having

a poor academic performance.

3. Both in the positive and negative effects, there is no significant difference

between the perceived effects of Social Networking Site when grouped according

to the age and sex. This implies that age and sex has nothing to do with the

academic performance of the students. Meanwhile, when it comes to General

Weighted Average, there is a significant difference between GWA and the

academic performance of the students. It implies that GWA has to do with the

academic performance of the students.
