Lesson Plan #4

Standards/Quality Indicators/Skills
Missouri and national standards, quality indicators, and skills addressed by this lesson
NA-VA.K-4.4 Understanding the visual arts in relation to history and cultures
This means that the students will use visual arts to show things in history or cultures
Learning Objectives/Goals
The lessons objectives and learning outcomes appropriate for meeting curricular and student needs
1. The students will listen to the story Whos Who In Your Family and apply that to their own
lives.
2. The students will learn that it is okay to be different and that we should embrace
diversity.
3. The students will create a family tree of their own and present it to the rest of the class.

The goal for this lesson is to teach students that families come in all shapes and sizes and
that not every family will look the same. I want them to take away that it is okay to be
different. The students will explore different types of families by making their own family
trees and then presenting them to the class to show the other students different types of
families.
Assessment (type(s) of assessment used throughout the lesson)
Assessment(s) before, during, and after the lesson
The way that I will be assessing my students during this lesson is through their family trees.
I will look to make sure that they labeled everything properly, made sure it looked nice and
neat and that they presented the information to the class well.
Lesson Structure and Procedures
Sequence of events of the lesson elements. (The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g.
Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion
1. The students will come to the carpet for a read aloud. The book that we will be reading is
Whos Who In Your Family?
2. Throughout the book, I will pause and have the students give me a thumbs up if they
relate to what the page is talking about, for example when it talks about having a
stepmother or stepfather, students who have that would give a thumbs up.
3. After finishing the book, we will talk about how lots of the characters in the story had
different types of families and that we as a class have lots of different types of families.
4. Then, the teacher will inform the students that they will be making their own family trees
in class.
5. The students will have 3 class periods to work on their family trees before finalizing them
and turning them in.
6. When all the family trees are done, the students will each present theirs to the class,
showing the students that we all have different families and that it is okay.
7. After the presentations are over, I will hang them up in the hallway as a reminder that all
students are unique and come from different families.
Instructional Strategies
Teacher approach to helping students achieve the learning objectives and meet their needs
The instructional strategy that I will be focusing on in this lesson is modeling and facilitating.
I will be modeling for the class by showing them my own family tree as an example for
them. I will be facilitating the discussions that we have about family trees and about
diversity in families after reading the book.
Learning Activities
Opportunities provided for students to develop knowledge and skills of the learning
objective
The students will have the opportunity to learn through making the family tree and through
the whole class discussions about diversity in family. They will show their learning through
the family tree and will get to learn about diversity in families through the whole class
discussion.
Resources and Materials
List of materials used in the planning of and during the instruction of the lesson
The materials that I will need for this lesson are:
- Whos Who In My Family
- Example family tree
- Various art supplies that the students will need to complete their family trees
(markers, crayons, glue, scissors)
- Construction paper to put the family trees on
Technology
Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and
student learning
There will not be any technology involved in this lesson plan unless the students use it
outside of school to research their families.
Differentiated/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor
To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language differences, etc.
There will not be any modifications made to this assignment. I want all of the students to
complete the same task in their own unique way.
Classroom Management
Strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet student behavior needs to
help keep students on task and actively engaged
I will just make sure while the students are working that they are staying on task by walking
around the room and giving them reminders.
Extensions
Activities for early finishers that extend students understanding of and thinking about the learning
objectives by applying their new knowledge in a different way
There will not be any extensions to the assignment, the students that finish early can just
add more to their family trees.
Follow-up to Todays Lesson
Quick activity for review or building on todays learning that will deepen student understanding and
interconnect concepts (may be incorporated tomorrow or throughout the unit
The follow up to the lesson will be the presentations and the family trees hanging out in the
hallway to serve as a constant reminder to the students about diversity in families.
