(a) Find the class interval in which the median lies.
(b) There was only one further repair that week, not included in the table. That repair cost £1000. Dave
says “The class interval in which the median lies will change.” Is Dave correct? Explain your
answer.
(c) The garage also sells cars. It offers a discount of 20% off the normal price for cash. Dave pays
£5200 cash for a car. Calculate the normal price of the car.

Question 4 (6 marks)

(a) Show that x3 + x2 = 230.
(b) The equation x3 + x2 = 230 has a solution x=5 and x=6. Use a trial
and improvement method to find this solution. Give your answer
correct to 1 decimal place. You must show all your working.

Question 5 (3 marks)
The diameter of a semi-circle is 15cm. Calculate the area of the semi-circle. Give your answer to three
significant figures.
Question 6 (5 marks)
A straight line has equation y = ½ x + 1
The point P lies on the straight line. P has a y-coordinate of 5.
(a) Find the x-coordinate of P.
(b) Write down the equation of a different straight line that is parallel to y = ½ x + 1
(c) Rearrange y = ½ x + 1 to make x the subject.

Question 7 (4 marks)
Solve 2x – 3y = 11
5x + 2y = 18

Question 8 (4 marks)
BE is parallel to CD. AE = 6cm, ED = 4cm, AB = 4.5cm,
BE = 4.8cm.
(a) Calculate the length of CD.
(b) Calculate the length of the perimeter of the trapezium
EBCD.

Question 9 (3 marks) ab
a = 3 x 108 and b = 2 x 107 and a formula gives y2 =
a +b
Find y, giving your answer in standard form to two significant figures.

Question 10 (3 marks)
The diagram shows triangle ABC. Work out the length of AB. Give
your answer correct to 3 significant figures.

Question 11 (9 marks)
Julie does a statistical experiment. She throws a dice 600 times. She
scores six 200 times.
(a) Is the dice fair? Explain your answer.
Julie then throws a fair red dice once and a
fair blue dice once.
(b) Copy and complete the probability tree
diagram, showing the probabilities
clearly.
(c) (i) Julie throws a fair red dice once and
a fair blue dice once. Calculate the
probability that Julie gets a six on both
the red dice and the blue dice.
(ii) Calculate the probability that Julie
gets at least one six.

Question 12 (8 marks)
The diagram represents a large cone of
height 30cm and base diameter 15cm. The
large cone is made by placing a small cone,
A, of height 10cm and base diameter 5cm
on top of a frustrum, B.
(a) Calculate the volume of the frustrum B.
Give your answer correct to 3 sig figs.
(b) The diagram shows a frustrum. The diameter of the base is
3d cm and the diameter of the top is d cm. The height of the
frustrum is h cm. The formula for the curved surface area, S
cm2, of the frustrum is:
S = 2πd h 2 + d 2
Rearrange the formula to make h the subject.

(c) Two mathematically similar frustrums have heights of 20cm

and 30cm. The surface area of the smaller frustrum is 450
cm3. Calculate the surface area of the larger frustrum.

Question 13 (5 marks)
A trapezium has the top and bottom sides parallel. The bottom side has length 20cm, and the top side
has length x cm. The trapezium is 2x cm high. he area of the trapezium is 400 cm2.
(a) Show that x2 + 20x = 400

2L
g=
T sin x o
2

T = 1.3 correct to 1 decimal place

L = 4.50 correct to 2 decimal places
x = 30 correct to the nearest integer.
