1. Understand what totem poles are and how they tell stories by making their own totem pole

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
* Pencil Crayons
* Toilet Paper tubes/Kitchen role tubes
* Totem Pole Picture Collage
PROCEDURE
Introduction (7min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber:
Assessment of Prior Knowledge:
ASK: What is an indigenous person?
ASK: What did they use to communicate?
EXPAIN how indigenous people used symbols to write stories and they also used symbols of animals on
totem poles as another way to tell a story.
** Play Video
ASK: After watching the video can anyone tell me what a totem pole is? Why did people make them?

EXPLAIN that we are going to make a totem pole of our own. And if they are super good we are going to
make one giant totem pole for our entire class and hang it on the wall or in the doorway. But they have to be
good and colored super nice, with a lot of effort if we want them shown in our classroom.

Transition to Body:
Show example of the totem students are going to make.
Body (50min.):

Learning Activity #1: THETOTEM TUBE (20min)
Show example, explain to students the steps:
1. Have students sit quietly whilst I hand out tubes, - if student is talking, dont give tube
2. Have students put their hand up when tube is colored
3. Give students tape to attach tubes show example (Give long tube to student who will struggle
attaching the 3 tubes together)
Walk around, observe and help students attach tubes together if struggling

Learning Activity #2: THE ANIMALS (30min)


1. When all students are done with the tubes explain they can take 2/3 of the totem animal sheets.
2. Explain how if you and a neighbor want to do two different animals on the same sheet, to share the
sheet and save paper relate this to reducing
3. Have students color 4 animals and cut them out then glue them to the totem pole
4. Remind Student: This is going on the wall for all the school to see, they must be colored super nice

Expectations for learning and behavior:


Nice Coloring
No hitting with the totems or they will be taken away

Transition 123 eyes on me


Tell students to CLEAN UP
Closure (3 min.):
ASK: What is a totem pole?
ASK: Does anyone remember who used totem poles to tell stories?
ASK: Who are indigenous people?
