PLAN TIME: 10:00-10:30 CLASS: Kindergarten

DURATION: 30 minutes SCHOOL: Kurious

Pre-school Competency #1: Children will perform gross motor movements by going
competencies: through the obstacle course (walking, jumping, crawling, running etc.).
Developmental They will also situate themselves in the physical environment. They will
Domains respect safety rules while doing the obstacle course.
Competency #2: Students will become aware of the strength and
weakness of their bodies and physical fitness by discussing their
experience doing the obstacle course.
Competency #4: Students will become familiar with directional words
and will be able to practice using them.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES:
Communicate:
1. To act as professional inheritor, critic and interpreter of knowledge or culture when teaching
students.
I will ask students if they had any prior experience with obstacle course and will connect it to
directional concepts.
2. To communicate clearly in the language of instruction, both orally and in writing, using correct
grammar, in various contexts related to teaching.
I will ask students questions in regards to the video. I will emphasize the use of directional words.
3. To develop teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the students concerned and the
subject content with a view to developing the competencies targeted in the programs of study
I will organize an appropriate obstacle course for students to move through. They will be able to
practice gross motor skills by walking, running, throwing, jumping, crawling etc.
4. To pilot teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the students concerned and to the
subject content with a view to developing the competencies targeted in the programs of study.
I will teach students words like over, under, around, across and have them re-enact it. I will
also allow students to input their ideas on safety rules.

TIME LESSON
Introduction: I will tell students that we are going to view a video which
10-12 is an animation of the book Rosies walk.
Min. Rosies walk is a book written by Pat Hutchins. We are going to
watch an animation of that book. What I want you to pay attention
to is the environment surrounding Rosie. Make note of where
Rosie the hen goes and what obstacles the fox in the video
encounters.
I will play the video for the children, which is around 4 minutes. I
will ask them what they liked about the video and their thoughts.
Then I will ask them: Where did Rosie go on her walk at the
farm? Have you ever visited a farm and seen those places?
What happened to the fox? Did the fox catch the hen? If not, how
did the hen escape from the foxs grasp?
After the discussion, I will brainstorm with students some of the
directional words heard in the video such as Across, around,
over, past, through and under. If they dont remember the words,
I will show them the pages of the story using a hardcopy of the
book. I will ask students to demonstrate some of these words with
their bodies (e.g. they may go under a desk for example). Then I
will ask them if they know of other directional words.
I will ask students if they know what obstacle course means, if
TIME LESSON
they have prior experience with it or if they face any obstacles on
their way to school. I will tell them we will be navigating through
an obstacle course using our bodies in the next activity.

Development: Recess ground: Obstacle course

I will lead the children outside where they will see the obstacle
15 course I have installed.
min. The obstacle course will consist of the following elements:
- Walk through the small inflatable arch
- Move around the puddle of water (created by the teacher)
- Go under the broomstick placed on top chairs (add a mattress so
students can crawl under)
- Jump in and out of 4 sets of hula hoops
- Balance yourself on a line of plank of wood
. - Go through the tube made of cardboard boxes
- Go over small plastic stools
- Weave through the cones
- Pick up small bean bags and try to throw on in a large bucket (when
successful, move on)
- Run across the recess ground to the finish line (Trace the finish line
on the floor with chalk or tape) where you can pick up a flag and wave
it.
Before starting the obstacle course, I will give students a short
talk on safety. I will tell them We dont want to get hurt while
doing this. What are some of the rules we can establish to do this
in a safe way? Students can offer suggestions like not to push
other students around to try to get to the finish line first, look
where you are going etc. I will write these ideas on a poster.
On the topic of safety, I will add that Stretching our muscles is
good to do before engaging in any exercise. Then I will model
stretching positions and students will copy. Students can also
offer their own stretching position.
Then, I will demonstrate how the obstacle course works.
Students will form a line and wait their turn to go through them.
As a teacher, I will facilitate this process. If a speaker is available
to use, I will put on some music while the students complete the
obstacle course.
5 min.
CLOSURE /TRANSITION:
I will ask students how they found the obstacle course. Did they
enjoy it? Was there anything difficult to do? Was it easy to move
around?
I will review what we did by asking students which one of these
obstacles did you have to go over, under, across, around etc. This
TIME LESSON
is also a way for us to revise the directional words.

Evaluation:
Did the children enjoy and understand the story and what an
obstacle course is?
Did children participate in the discussion of the video?
Were the children able to demonstrate the meaning of the
directional words?
Were the children able to move through the obstacle course using
gross motor skills without much difficulty and without breaching
the safety rules we came up with as a class?
Were children able to articulate what they did in the obstacle
course?
TIME ACTIVITY

Whats next? (Development/Extensions)

-Have students create their own obstacle course.
-Students can have incorporate an additional challenge to the obstacle course by
carrying a plush toy or doll while doing it (For example, their mission would be to
carry the doll to safety by going through the obstacle course).

Follow up activities: Read other books or watch other videos on obstacle course.
- Draw a huge snakes and ladder game with the students in the recess
ground and ask them where they want to put the snakes and ladders and
what challenge we can assign on certain steps (e.g. hop on one leg on
box 5, do 5 jumping jacks on box 10 etc).
- Students can engage in a scavenger hunt within the classroom where
they have to find certain objects or pieces of a puzzle.
