Lesson Title: A Dot Takes a Walk Grade Level: Kindergarten

S & S Statements: Students will continue practicing visual analysis by creating an abstract line with oil
pastel and turning it into meaningful shapes.

Concepts and Skills: Students will practice visual analysis when looking at an abstract group of
shapes they have created by determining what real-life objects their shapes look like. Students will also
experiment with the use of oil pastel as an artistic medium.

Vocabulary: Line, Shape, Contour Line

Purpose of Lesson (Overall Lesson Objective): Given a story, A Line is a Dot that Went for a Walk,
students will create a contour line following the directions of a story, then students will identify shapes
that they created and use oil pastels to change the shapes into recognizable objects.

Objectives:
1. Given a story A Line is a Dot that Went for a Walk, students will accurately follow instructions of the
story in creating a contour line.
2. Given oil pastel, students will creatively change their abstract line into recognizable objects.

Assessment Criteria:
1. Students will create a contour line that has all the seven types of lines in the story (dotted line, zigzag
line, curved line, wavy line, thick line, thin line, and dashed line)
2. Students will draw recognizable objects using their contour line as is, without changing the original
line.
