CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. Rationale

Engineers are a necessity in the modern world. According to the Commission on Higher Education,
year 2014, 61,786 students graduated under the course concerning Engineering and Technology.
Almost all students who graduate would have no other choice but to find a job. Employment is not
a basic topic when it comes to the employers and the soon to be employees. Thus, it follows that
employment is a viable subject of research.

B. Background of the Study

The Engineering Manpower Commission (197 1) studied about the employment rate of
Engineers with their corresponding Unemployment rate wherein they said that the
unemployment rate of engineers was 3 percent.

On a separate research named Journal of Engineering Education, they found out that
the more experience a person has before graduation results to a higher starting salary after
graduation and more jobs are offered to them.
Another study conducted by the National Science Foundation(1982) shows the
difference in employment rate of the S/E graduates, their studies showed the following: the
1978 and 1979 S/E graduates achieved higher employment rates in 1980 than those reported by
their 1974 and 1975 counterparts for 1976; of the new bachelor's degree entrants in the 1980
labor force, 96 percent were employed, inside or outside of S/E fields, compared to 91 percent 4
years earlier.
A study conducted by Kolvereid entitled Prediction of Employment Status Choice
Intentions(1996) employment status choice intentions had an indirect relationship with the
attitude and behavior of a person.
On Warrens research, Employment During High School: Consequences for Students'
Grades in Academic Courses (2016), he stated that Prior research has not properly tested
theories about the source of relationship between student and grades and has not found the
nature of this topic. He also stated that students who are employed while in high school tend
to have lower grades in their subjects.
A research conducted by Lee and Vicki entitled Work Experience: Expanding
Opportunities for Undergraduates focuses on work experience for undergraduates. It was
found that even though work experience helps on employment, it is still hindered by three
factors namely: lack of resources, organization barriers, and discrepancies between supply and
demand.
According to Hoyts research, The Relationship between College Grades and Adult
Achievement (1965), college students grades barely or does not reflect his or her future
achievement. It is also seen that employers would evaluate an individuals potential by viewing
their grades.
In a literature review conducted by Wingard and Williamson titled Grades as Predictors
of Physicians Career Performance: An Evaluative Literature Review, wherein they studied the
relationship between undergraduates academic performance to their ensuing career
performance, it was shown that both these aspects have little or no relation to each other.
A study regarding the Perception Differential between Employers and Undergraduates
on the Importance of Employability Skills by Wye and Lim revealed that undergraduates are all
capable in obtaining the personal qualities and skills that employers tend to search for in an
individual but non-technical skills (i.e. oral communication, critical thinking, negotiating, decision
making, etc.) are what differentiates an employers point of view with that of an
undergraduates.
Another study by Roth, BeVier, Switzer and Schippmann (1996), Meta-analyzing the
relationship between grades and job performance, showed that employers use grades to predict
an individuals job performance contrary to what many academics say that grades are an invalid
measure to predict their performance.

C. Statement of the Problem

The researchers would like to determine the effects of the Official Transcript of Records on an
engineers success with regards to his/her employment.

D. Objective/s

To provide our readers information on the effect of grades on the employment and to help
engineering students foresee what lies ahead of them after graduation.

E. Significance

The findings of this research will provide benefits not only to engineering students but any other
individual who would apply for a job in the near future. It is expected that it would give the
necessary information to every curious reader.

Chapter 2: Methodology

I. Introduction

This chapter gives an overview on what is going to happen in the process of the research.
This chapter enumerates, discuss, and explains what research design the researchers will use,
what research instrument they will utilize and also how they will gather the data and extract it to
get the desired results.

II. Research Design

This is a descriptive research which aims to observe and describe the relationship
between the Transcript of Records and the employment chances/rate of engineering degree
graduates.

III. Research Instrument

The researchers would generally use questionnaires as a way to gather information from
the sample. This along with other instruments similar to it would be used to get data. The use of
questionairres in gatheriing data will make it useful for both the respondents and the researcher.
Comparing it with interviews and other instruments, it would take a longer time to gather data
and also this method doesn't intimidate the respondent. Lastly, this instrument makes use of
direct questions and direct answers.

IV. Subjects & Study Site

The sample population would be gained through Purposive Sampling since the study is
about engineers and their employers, the researchers cannot get data from any person they see.
To be specific the target sample for this research would be employers for engineering professions
and engineering degree graduates located within the Cordillera Administrative Region.

V. Data Gathering Procedure

According to Flores, Philippine Star (March 2014), approximately 62,000 college students
graduate each year making it our population size. The researchers obtained a confidence level of
95% and a margin of error equal to 5%, using the table below it is seen that 62,000 is
approximately 100,000 thus giving us 383 fresh graduates for our sample size. Data would be
gathered through the questionaires and will be done with the consent of the person.

VI. Treatment of the Data

The data gathered would then be tallied per question and statistical methods would be
used to garner the quality of the answer to the question. Other parameters would be used to
interpolate the data gathered.
