Classroom questions can be categorized in a variety of ways and different types of questions serve different
goals. For this assignment, questions have been grouped into three broad categories: those which are
knowledge/comprehension based, those that deal with application, and those which require
analysis/synthesis/evaluation. (Remember the Blooms Taxonomy we discussed in class?). In this part of the
observation assignment you are asked to keep track of the types of questions asked during a given period of
time a 15-20-minute segment of a lesson. Tally the questions asked according to the three categories.

Analysis/Synthesis/Evaluation || Examine
Based: Point out
As a teacher I would want to use knowledge based questions to determine what my students know and what
information they can recall from the lesson. This question would be appropriate and effective because it will
allow me to assess how the students are coming along and also to check that I am explaining my lesson clearly
and effectively.
I would want to use questions in the comprehensive or applications category to see that my students can recall
and apply what they have learned to different tasks.
Questions requiring analysis/synthesis/evaluation:
Questions that require analysis, synthesis, or evaluations are important because they get the students thinking
about what they have learned. These type of questions require the students to break down what they have
learned and examine it.
