Past Tense Simple is used to talk about an action
which started and finished in the past.
It is formed:
AFFIRMATIVE: S+ VERB+ -ED
e.g.: I worked
NEGATIVE: S+ DID+ NOT+ VERB
e.g.: I DID NOT WORK (she explains them that in
the negative form the verb does not take the ed
termination)
INTERROGATIVE: DID+ S+VERB
e.g.: Did I work?
She explains and writes on the blackboard the main
uses of Past Tense Simple:
The Past Tense Simple is used:
1. to talk about a past action- we know the
precise time: last week, last month, in 1990
etc.
e.g.: I visited her last week.

2
2. To talk about an action that was common in
the past, but now it is not
e.g.: I cooked every evening- I do not do this
anymore
SPELLING RULES:
- The final consonant of the verb is
doubled when the preceding vowel
is short and stressed: stop- stopped,
travel- travelled;
- The final-y disappears when it is
preceded by a consonant, and the
verb takes ied termination;
e.g.: study- studied
- The verbs finished in e only take
d termination
