Student Teaching Lesson Plan

Subject: Science Central Focus:

Newtons 2nd Law of Motion

Essential Standards/Common Core Objective: Date taught:

5.P.1.4 Predict the effect of a given force or a change in 9/25/2017
mass on the motion of an object.

Rationale: Students should understand what Newtons 1st law of motion is, the terms: force, acceleration,
mass, apply, hypothesis, results, test, experiment, distance and measurement. Students should be able to
measure the distance traveled by an object, and how gravity is a force.

Daily Lesson Objective-

Performance: Students will be able to make hypotheses on which order of four cylinders will travel the
furthest when the weight of the objects vary (the mass stays the same) and two different net forces are
applied. They will also be able to test their hypotheses, record the outcome, and give an explanation of
why the results were as they were and if their hypotheses were correct.

Conditions: Students will work in independently to create hypotheses on the two cylinders that their group
is given and predict the outcome of which cylinder will travel the furthest (the small cylinder or the large
cylinder), then they will work in small groups to fill in the testing chart and the results chart (plotting the
data points of distance and recording with cylinder travel furthest), then independently students will
complete the questions of if their hypotheses were correct and provide explanations of why or why not.

Criteria: Students are expected to get 6 of 10 questions correct, based on hypothesis, filling in the charts,
and explanation of results.

Whole objective with all components combined:

Students will be able to independently create a hypotheses for an experiment, in whole groups test the
experiment, and independently conclude is their hypotheses were correct, and must get 6 out of 10
questions correct, based on hypothesis, filling in the charts, and explanation of results.
Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time

1. Engage Today we are covering Newtons 2nd law of motion. It 7

states that when we apply force to an object, the objects
acceleration will change, and if the mass of the object
increases, to achieve the same amount of acceleration
more force will need to be applied. One example is this
(plays video of 2 balls of different masses in an air cannon,
pausing part way) Before he launches the balls, Im going to
make a hypothesis of which one will go further. Since he
said the yellow one is lighter, I think that one is going to go
a further distance, because it would take more force for
the red one to move compared to the yellow one. But lets
see. (finished the video) I can see the my hypothesis was
correct because the force of the air was the same and the
yellow ball traveled a further distance.

2. Explore Now we will be testing some of our own hypotheses with 15

cylinders of different masses. You will be put in groups of
six and have 2 cylinders per group. Make some hypotheses
on which will travel a further distance.

Students are placed into groups and they can make their
hypotheses.

Now that youve all made your hypotheses, we will test

them. Each group has a measuring tape, a ramp, and your
cylinders. First you will chose members of your group to be
a recorder, someone to apply the forces to the cylinders,
two people to hold down the measuring tape, and one to
two people to measure the distance traveled. Then you will
be able to apply your first force of wind by blowing on the
cylinder. The directions are on your worksheet, have fun
and apply those forces.

Students will then break up into small groups and test their
hypotheses.

3. Explain Teacher walks the room asking groups what theyve done 8
and if their hypotheses are coming true and why.
Student is expected to explain that the force acting on the
larger cylinder would need to be increased to equal the
distance of the smaller cylinder (or a variant of this
sentence).
4. Elaborate/ Students can then further test their hypotheses with 10
Extend different applications of force on each object. They could
roll the object by hand, use rubber bands, or other forces.
Students could also try using the same forces on objects of
different mass.

5. Evaluate Formative: Asking: Who had a hypothesis proven to be 5

(Assessment correct? Did the small or larger cylinder travel a further
methods) distance?

Summative: Worksheet (given below) recording their

hypotheses, the data they tested, and the results of that
data, as well as if their hypotheses were proven and why.
Must get 6 of 10 questions correct to pass.

Materials/Technology: 4 small cylinders, 4 large cylinders, worksheet, measuring tape, ramp,

Cylinders: Circle which cylinders your group received.

Example: My hypothesis is: the cylinder that will travel the most distance when air is applied
will be the smaller black cylinder when compared to the larger black cylinder. I think the order
will stay the same for when gravity from the ramp is applied.
My hypothesis is:

from the ramp is applied
Test your hypothesis with your group:
1. Place one of your cylinders at the beginning of the measuring tape.
2. Lightly blow on the cylinder from directly behind it.
3. Watch the cylinder roll forward and record the distance traveled on the chart below.
4. Pick up the first used cylinder and place it to the side.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 with the second cylinder.
6. Record your final results of which cylinder (small or large) traveled the furthest distance
in the Results chart.
7. Then repeat steps 1 through 6 but with the force of gravity from the ramp in exchange
for lightly blowing on the cylinder.
