Abstract:

In this study, a novel zero-crossing detector has been designed and implemented that operates as quite
steady under the distorted grids due to harmonics. For this aim, a circuit has been designed using
UA741, an operational amplifier, which is not affected owing to instant spikes and sags on the signals of
current or voltage. Most of the zero-crossing detectors presented in the literature recently generate
unsteady output signals usually under the distorted current and voltage signals. The novel zero-crossing
detector circuit presented in this study serves a powerful solution for such problems. The detector
designed has been tested under various conditions and signals including 19.8% Total harmonic distortion
(THD). It has been observed by the test results that the detector operates with optimum performance.

I. Introduction

Most of the inductive and capacitive loads as well as switching equipments distort the grid and cause
the harmonics. Therefore, measuring such values as current, voltage, frequency and power factor of the
system is being a complicated problem due to harmonics and distorted signal waveforms. On the other
hand, detecting of the power factor correctly is an important process for the reactive power
compensation applications which include zero-crossing circuits. Zero-crossing circuits are also use for
the energy observation systems. These systems also require correct measurements that are not affected
from distortions on the grid.
