MAED 3224
Subject: 4th grade math Central Focus: Multiplication

Common Core Objective: 4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole Date taught: 12/1/17

number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole
number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using
strategies based on place value and the properties
of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation
by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area
models.
Daily Lesson Objective:
Performance- Students will be able to multiply two two-digit numbers using a strategy of their choice.

Conditions- Students will compete against their classmates and play Bingo as a whole class, then
complete an exit ticket individually.

Criteria- Students show mastery when they get at least 8 out of 10 possible points on their exit ticket.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills needed: Students need to be able to multiply two two-digit numbers using
a variety of strategies.

Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time

1. Engage - Call students together and get their attention. 5 minutes
- Today we are going to play multiplication bingo,
and you are going to have to solve two-digit
problems in order to play.
- Briefly explain the rules of bingo in case there are
students that are unfamiliar with the game.
2. Explore - Write the problem 13 x 11 on the board. 10 minutes
(including solutions of major tasks) - Model how to solve the problem using multiple
strategies (standard algorithm, lattice method,
repeated addition, etc.)
- Write the problem 11 x 20 on the board.
- Allow students time to solve the problem, then call
on volunteers to show their work on the board.
3. Explain - Pass out bingo cards and instruct students to take 20 minutes (or
out a piece of paper and a pencil to show work. enough time to
- Pick one card and read the problem as an example. play a few
Ask students to solve. rounds)
- Call on a student to give the answer. If the answer
is correct, write the answer on the board. If the
answer is not correct, help the student to solve the
problem correctly.
- Students should find the answer on their boards
and cover it with a counter.
- Continue to pick cards and call them out until a
student has bingo.

4. Elaborate/Extend If students are struggling, they can work in small

groups (2-3 students) and solve the problems
together.
If students are ready for a challenge, ask them to fill
their entire board with counters before calling out
bingo.
5. Evaluate Students will pull out a piece of scrap paper and 10 minutes
(assessment methods) answer the following question: Ms. Taylor took her
4th grade class on a field trip to the Discovery Place.
There are 24 students in the class and admission to
get into the Discovery Place is $13 per person. How
much money will it cost for Ms. Taylor and her class
to get in? They need to include a number sentence,
a drawing/work shown, and the final answer must
be circled or identified in another way as the final
answer.

Students will be given:

- 3 points for conceptual
understanding/drawing
- 4 points for procedural fluency/correct
answer
- 3 points for problem solving/number
sentence

Materials/Technology: bingo cards, counters (enough for each student)
