Thinking the Balkans out of the Box lsst die blichen engen, oft
staatszentrierten Auffassungen von der europischen Integra-
tion und der regionalen Kooperation mit Blick auf Sdosteuropa
hinter sich.
Auf der Grundlage von Fallstudien zeigt das Buch allgemeine
wie spezifische Zge der Integration und der Regionsbildung im
Rahmen der Konzepte eines frhen, alten, neuen und ver-
gleichenden Regionalismus, die sich eher ergnzen, als dass sie
einander wechselseitig ausschlieen.
In einem weiten zeitlichen Horizont werden diese vier aufein-
ander folgenden Anstze in ihrem jeweiligen Kontext betrachtet:
der Nachkriegszeit, dem Kalten Krieg, der Zeit nach 1989 und der
gegenwrtigen hypertextuellen oder multiplexen Weltordnung.
Heute sind Integration und Regionalisierung eng miteinander
verbunden und deutlich heterogener, offener, inklusiver, um-
fassender und multidimensional.
Der Autor:
Christophe Solioz war seit den frhen 1990er-Jahren an Brger-
initiativen im frheren Jugoslawien vor allem im Rahmen der
Helsinki Citizens Assembly beteiligt. Von 2003 bis 2005 als
Initiator der Fderation Bosnien und Herzegowina aktiv und
von 2005 bis 2014 treibende Kraft des Centre for European Inte-
gration Strategies (CEIS), lebt er heute in Genf als Professor der
Philosophie am Collge de Gneve. Von ihm stammen zahl-
reiche Beitrge zu den Themen Transition und Demokratisie-
rung sowie zur europischen Integration und zum Regionalis-
mus in Sdosteuropa.

Thinking the Balkans out of the Box moves away from narrow
and conventional, often state-centred, understandings of Euro-
pean integration and regional cooperation in relation to South
East Europe.
Based on case studies, this book presents both common and
specific features of integration and region-building within the
framework of early, old, new and comparative regionalism
approaches, which the author sees as complementary rather
than mutually exclusive.
Using a long-term timeline, the author contextualises these four
waves in the post-Second World War era, the Cold War period,
the post-Cold War era, and our current hypertext or multiplex
world order respectively. In the latter, integration and regio-
nalisation become significantly more intertwined, heterogeneous,
open, inclusive, comprehensive and multidimensional.
The Author:
From the early 1990s, Christophe Solioz was involved in various
citizens initiatives in the former Yugoslavia, most notably in the
Helsinki Citizens Assembly. A founder member of the Association
of Bosnia and Herzegovina (20032005) and later on of the Cen-
tre for European Integration Strategies CEIS (20052014), he now
lives in Geneva and works as a philosophy professor at the Collge
de Genve. He has written extensively on transition and
democratisation, as well as on EU integration and regionalism
in South East Europe.
