a mosque
All over the world you can observe Muslims adapting to given surroundings in order to be at prayer.
The Qur'an gives specific parameters, such as the orientation and the worship itself, to be respected and leaves freedom to spatial
circumstances at the same time. This leads often to conditions in which an everyday context is turned in to an extraordinary constellation.
The prayers ability to adapt to any circumstance inspired us throughout the whole process of designing a mosque at the harbor of Genoa.
The Site provided three different existing warehouses which could be ether demolished or maintained. Since a mosques space is defined by
symbolic elements, rather than by formal and programmatic aspects, we chose the opportunity to establish the mosque within the given
buildings.
Just like prayers we took necessary elements and turned the abandoned warehouse into a sacred space by creating a bricolage out of offered
elements and added symbols. The valorization of the expressive power and memorial potentiality of the main building gives high visibility at
place of worship.
In the context of a minority / majority dialectic, this visibility has symbolic importance to communities. Distorting the neutrality of usual
urban artifacts, such as street lamps facing Mecca or the light house / minaret (inspired by the water tower of the Stazione Termini in
Rome by Angiolo Mazzoni) accentuates the ambiguity between visibility and readability of the mosque. These perturbations disturb the
predictability of the harbor reconversion, inviting us to transform public space into a space of hypothesis, just like the prayer does.

redevelopment_habour area in genoa
academic work
The aim of the project is to revalutate the area of Molo Giano, in Genoa, in order to make it compatible to the urban surrounding, removing it from the
pure trade and commerce use that still has. It is then to redevelop the area and provide it with spaces for the residence, and therefore private, and other
facilities for the free time.
Do not create, but order what already exists is the guide line of our project. According to this logic, we decides to mantain the first three moles of the
historical complex realizing in them some public pools. Next to the pools we design a bathing, including two light structures for services related to the
beach; adjacent to that, there are the constructions intended for leisure and sporting activities.
Swimming pools, establishment, well-being spa, sports center, bars and restaurants form a first complex of services on the north-west area. The second
service system is located on the east side in front of Duca degli Abruzzi yatch port.
Here we find the pavillions for commercial activities and service activities related to boating, as well as catering services. The residences, however, are
located close to the wall that delimits Via Quadrio, and are placed in front of the monorail.
They run along the entire wall, from the south-east and stop below the monumental staircase leading down, linking Via Quadrio with Molo giano. The
residences have been placed in this area of the project for the easy accessibility to them, thanks to the presence of the monumental staircase and of the
monorail, and then to separate them from the more typically public and commerce environments of the moles.
In front of the residences there is a long tree-lined promenade that binds to the staircase, to the monorail station, and especially to the central point of
the entire project: the urban park of trees and paths.
The park starts near the two fountains in front of the staircase that winds, with triangular shape, between the system of pools-beach-wellness/sports and
the yatch port with its pavilions, and finally ends with a wide promenade characterized by "Italian gardens".
In this way you are able to give to the city of Genoa that green direct and daily mentioned by Renzo Piano, and, above all, its sea, its characteristic feature.
fish market_genoa
academic work
Which is the main resource and at the same time the key feature of Genoa? Definitely the sea.
It is from this observation that, according to our third year workshop subject, we began looking for a suitable area to accommodate our project
for a fish market.
The first part of the workshop was devoted to the selection of a suitable site for the construction of the project. Analyzing the coastline of
Genoa you realize that it is quite full and dense and that the only empty and suitable space is the wide area of Piazzale Kennedy. The choice
of this space has been determined based on the fact that it seemed like a vacuum without identity, fit to be exploited, in a small part, as a site
for the project.
This selected part of the square corresponds to the space where Corso Italia crosses Via Casaregis. This is a kind of a point of convergence
between the context of the city and that of the promenade and the beaches of which the project intends to be the head.
The second part of the course consisted of designing a structure for a fish market.
The initial idea was to build a minimally invasive and fragmented system that would leave the surrounding space free to move and change, as it
already happens along the coast. The project for this area is configured as a set of heterogeneous elements whose aim is to create a functional
synergy and a dialogue with the surrounding space.
The real constructions are the fish market with its underground, two turrets (a caf and a few offices ), an underground space for exhibitions
under the terrace overlooking the sea and finally the great multifunctional public space created below the light, shed, that covers and gathers
under it all the elements of the project.
The whole complex is designed to link Piazzale Kennedy with Corso Italia but also Via Casaregis and the sea, hence, the choice to delineate
four different sides. The side of Via Casaregis is characterized by two large walls that frame the entry and the sea in the background while the
special features of corso Italias side are the two large partitions that invite you to entry and explore the multi-functional public space. Square
pillars similar to those of the nearby Piazzale Rossetti give to Piazzale Kennedys side a particular designer look and eventually the prospect
towards the sea is, of course, completely free.
Project lines are simple and minimal, shapes are always pure. Only the market coverage is a formal choice inspired by the coverage of the
project for Paula Rgo Museum in Cascais, Portugal, by Eduardo Souto de Moura.
