4
EMPLOYMENT CONDITION S AND BENEFITS

Work Arrangements, Stipend and Benefits

The AUI Presidential Internship Program will begin with a one-week orientation program in
late August. The first day of work will be the start of September. Each intern will undergo
an evaluation by their supervisor in late December in order to determine whether their
employment contract will continue throughout the year.

The internships are considered paid volunteer positions and carry a small stipend. It may be
compared to a Peace Corps opportunity. To cover basic expenses interns receive a small
stipend during their time in Ifrane. These stipends are paid in ten monthly installments at the
end of each month. The first payment is on September 30, 2016, and the last payment is one
week before the end of June 2017. For the 2016-2017 academic year the stipend will be 3,000
Moroccan Dirhams per month (approximately $310 at prevailing exchange rate). The stipend
will not be taxable in the United States provided that the intern remains outside the U.S. for
330 days or more. Interns will be provided with a settling-in allowance of 500 Moroccan
Dirhams upon their arrival in Ifrane and 2,000 Moroccan Dirhams towards their round-trip
airfare to Rabat upon completion of their contract with AUI in June of 2017.

Interns follow the administrative rather than the academic schedule. The work week at AUI
is Monday through Friday, 8.30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Some positions require other schedules or
overtime and weekend work during times of heavy activity.

Academic Benefits
Each semester, interns may take one scheduled, tuition-free Arabic language course at the
School of Humanities and Social Science (SHSS). Interns are also encouraged to partake of or
initiate special seminars, lectures, brown-bags, featuring discussions with local scholars and
community experts on various political, cultural, or social aspects of Morocco and the MENA-
region.

Opportunity for Community Outreach and Exploration

AUI is deeply involved in its community and takes pride in its outreach activities. Interns may
take advantage of additional time allotted during the workweek for approved community
outreach projects, cultural exploration or personal development. Opportunities abound,
including various services AUI provides through its Azrou Center for Community
Development. The interest of the intern will determine the activity and might include language
classes and tutoring to local constituents, among many other activities. Time away from the
office will consist of up to four hours per week scheduled regularly with the intern supervisor.
The intern may also take additional Arabic lessons. (The intern is responsible for paying for
these additional classes.)

5
Health Insurance
AUI will provide basic medical examination care through the AUI clinic and health insurance.
However, interns must have an insurance policy that will cover medications, analysis, testing,
and hospitalization outside the United States. AUI will cover the cost incurred in this
connection.

Housing
Interns will be housed in AUI faculty apartments in the Ifrane downtown residence or in on-
campus housing. The studios consist of a small kitchen, bathroom, couch and bedroom. The
cost of housing, utilities, and basic maintenance will be covered by the annual budget of each
interns office. Interns are allowed to occupy their housing units until July 30, 2017 if they
wish to remain in Ifrane until such a time.

Travel Opportunities
Interns are entitled to 15 vacation/sick days in addition to at least 15 days of official university
holiday time. This provides the interns with the opportunity to travel both independently and
through AUI sponsored trips. The interns are also invited to join new faculty members on a
number of subsidized trips around Ifrane and Morocco. Any time away from the office in
connection with travel plans must be approved by the interns supervisor

Transportation
Interns are responsible for their own transportation to and from Ifrane. AUI will arrange to
have the interns met at the airport and escorted to their apartments. Interns are also
responsible for their own transportation to and from work during the school year bus
shuttles are available, but should taxi transportation be used the fee is approximately 12
dirhams each way.
