FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY

Teenage pregnancy has been a worldwide issue that needs to be confronted to

mitigate the problems of maternal adolescent childbearing, especially in the third world

countries. In fact, it has emerged to be one of the major public health problems in South

Asia (Raj et al., 2010) and in Western Europe (Seamarck, 2001). It is reported in India

that adolescent pregnancy is one of the serious health threat for women aged 15-19 years

old (Patra, 2016). In Nigeria, the ratio of teenage mothers to women in their 20s who

actually die during pregnancy and childbirth is 5:1. In addition, they likely have higher

mortality rates for infants (Amoran, 2012).

Recent (2014) data from the Philippine Statistical Authority (PSA) reveal that

every hour, 24 babies are delivered by teenage mothers. According to the 2014 Young

Adult Fertility and Sexuality (YAFS) study, around 14 percent of Filipino girls aged 15

to 19 are either pregnant for the first time or are already mothersmore than twice the

rate recorded in 2002. Among six major economies in the Association of Southeast Asian

Nations, the Philippines has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies and is the only

country where the rate is increasing, per the United Nations Population Fund.

Due to the increasing cases of teenage pregnancy in the Philippines and found out

on this last decade that Philippines has the highest case all through the Asian region.

Filipino communities, families and teenagers must be smart enough to counter the

phenomenon.

The independent variables of the study are community, family, peers and the

church while dependent variable is the effects on the perception of high school students
towards the increase of teenage pregnancy cases in the Philippines. An independent

variable or a combination of these can be the cause of different perception of high school

students towards the increase of teenage pregnancy cases considering that Filipino

families usually offer sex education to their teenagers truncated halfway which usually

misunderstood, or never touched about sex because of the thought that teens are too

young to know anything about sex which leave their teenagers to learn out of their

initiatives which usually mislead and might make them submit to early sex. The

community also has a big role on this because teenagers who are exposed to the society

where sex is tolerated and a lot of teenagers are pregnant might convince them to do the

same thinking it is accepted in the community and it is a norm. Most of all peers and

friends of teenagers might be one cause, which happen to go with peers that having a

positive attitude towards early and or premarital sex but no knowledge yet about dealing

sex which result to teenage pregnancy.

The research paradigm shows the inputs age, gender, awareness towards the

increasing cases of teen pregnancy, and the perception of the respondents on the causes

of early pregnancy. The process consists of developing the questionnaire, sending an

approval letter, distribution of the questionnaires and tabulating & analyzing data

collected. Lastly, the output consists of the awareness campaign through seminars,

campaign ads, movie/film showing in coordination with the Department of Social

Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Health (DOH), and other concerned

agencies.
