Tutorial-4

1. Link AB is to be made of a steel for which the ultimate normal stress is 450 MPa. Determine
the cross-sectional area of AB for which the factor of safety will be 3.5. Assume that the link
will be adequately reinforced around the pins at A and B.

2. A rod AC consist of two sections: AB and BC. The cross sectional area of part AB is 200 mm 2,
while that of part BC is 100 mm2. The rod is fixed at end A and a gap of 0.2 mm exists between
end C and the wall. A force P is applied at section B. The yield-point stress for the rod is 200
MPa. If E = 200 GPa, determine the maximum value of P before yielding occurs in the rod.
Calculate the stresses in the part AB and BC. [Given: AB = BC = 250 mm]

3. A rectangular plate of dimensions 15 cm x 20 cm and of unit thickness is subjected to forces

of 30 kN and 50 kN in the x and y directions, respectively. Assuming that these forces cause
uniform stresses, determine the normal and shear stresses on a plane whose normal is 60o
inclined to the horizontal axis.

4. A pressure vessel of 1.6-m inner diameter and 8-mm wall thickness is fabricated using a butt-
welded seams forming an angle of 20o with a transverse plane. The length of the cylinder is 3-
m supported on two cradles. One of the cradle is designed so that it does not exert any
longitudinal force on the vessel. The gage pressure inside the vessel is 600 kPa. Determine,
(a) the normal stress perpendicular to the weld, (b) the shearing stress parallel to the weld.
5. Determine all the non-zero stress components when = 0.02, = 0.04 =
0.04. Take E = 200 GPa and = 0.3
a. Plane stress case
b. Plane strain case
c. Determine the principal strain direction and the corresponding principal strains.

6. A streel rod, 75 cm long, consist of two sectional areas, 12 cm2 (30 cm) and 18 cm2 (45 cm). It
fits snugly between two unyielding supports at a temperature T = 10o C. If the temperature
increases to 40o C, calculate the maximum stress induced in the rod. Take E = 200 GPa and
12x106 / o C .

7. Construct Mohrs circle for the following stress components xx 0 MPa ,

yy xy 10 MPa . What are the principal stresses and principal planes? Indicate this on
properly-oriented element.

8. The surface of a steel machine member is subjected to known principal stresses (1 =

300 MPa 2 = 100 MPa ). Determine the tensile yield strength required to provide a
safety factor of 2 with respect to initial yielding using Trescas criterion and Von-Mises
criterion.

HOME ASSIGNMENT

The tip deflection at C is 0.25 mm when a weight of W = 100 kg is suspended as shown in the
figure below. The rod ABC is rigid and, the struts BD and BE is made of steel with Youngs
modulus E = 200 GPa. Both the struts have same cross sectional area. The length of AB and AC
is L/4 and L respectively (L = 2 m). The joints at A, B D and E are pint joints. Assuming the yield
stress of stress as 600 MPa, determine the load W at which the structure will collapse? [Hint:
Assume the horizontal displacement of any point on the rod ABC is negligible].
