A Midsummer Nights Dream, called
The Fairy Queen. Purcell, the most important English composer ofhistime,
composed music covering a wide field: the church, the stage, the court,
and private entertainment. Inallthesebranchesofcompositionheshowed
an obvious admiration for the past combined with a willingness to learn
from the present, particularly from his contemporaries in Italy. With
alertness of mind went an individual inventiveness that marked him asthe
most original English composer of his time as well as one of the most
original in Europe.

Life
Not very much is known of Purcells life. His fatherwasagentlemanofthe
Chapel Royal, in which musicians for the royal service were trained, and
the son received his earliest educationthereasachorister.Whenhisvoice
broke in 1673, he was appointed assistant to John Hingston, keeper of the
kings instruments, whom he succeeded in 1683. From 1674 to 1678 he
tuned the organ at Westminster Abbey and was employed there in
167576 to copy organ parts of anthems. In 1677 he succeeded Matthew
Locke as the composer for Charles IIs string orchestra and in 1679 was
appointed organist of Westminster Abbey in succession to the composer
John Blow. A further appointment as one of the three organists of the
Chapel Royal followed in 1682. Heretainedallhisofficialpoststhroughthe
reigns of James II and William III and Mary. He married in1680or1681and
had at least six children, three of whom died in infancy. His son Edward
was also a musician, as was Edwards son Edward Henry (died 1765).
Purcell seems to have spent all his life in Westminster. A fatal illness
prevented him from finishing the music for the operatic version of John
Dryden and Sir Robert Howards verse tragedy The Indian Queen (1664),
which was completed after his death by his brother Daniel (d. 1717). Daniel
Purcell had also been brought up as a chorister in the Chapel Royal and
was organist of Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1688 to 1695. Before his
brothers death, he was little known as a composer, but from 1695 to 1707
he was in considerable demand for music forstageproductionsinLondon
until the advent of Italian opera brought his activities to an end.

Abdelazer

Aphra Behn. The music dates from 1695,
the last year of Purcells life. Although Behns play is no longerperformed,
the music for it remains one of Purcells most enduring creations.

The various sections of Purcells Abdelazer show the variety that was
expected of incidental music. The necessarydancerhythmsandcharacter
songs are deftly rendered, with moods ranging from slow and gentle to
brisk and lively and with nimble passagework for the string ensemble.

The most famous movement is the second, Rondeau, owing to the


EnglishcomposerBenjaminBrittensuseofitastherootofhiscomposition
The Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra (1945). In Brittens work,
Rondeau is heard only as a fragment, divorced from the rest of Purcells
score.
