Imitative Writing

Grade level: 1st grade science informal assessment


SOLs: Science life process 1.4 -The student will investigate and understand that plants have
basic life needs and functional parts and can be classified according to certain characteristics.
Key concepts include.) basic parts of plants;
WIDA Standard: ELP standard 4- the language of science, formative framework: Note a
difference or change by labeling drawings or copying words from word banks
WIDA Level: 2 Beginning
Purpose/Objectives:
Students will design and label the parts of a plant.
Students will copy the correct labels for each part of the plant
Students will copy the terms correctly on the flower.
Students will then transfer their knowledge from the work sheet and cut out parts of the
plant from construction paper and create their own model.
Directions:
The instructor will read the following directions out loud:
1. Students, each of you will receive a worksheet on the parts of the plants.
2. Please fill your name out on the top line, write as clearly as possible.
3. Now cut out one word at a time and glue it to the flower chart in the correct spot. Cut out
the word stem first.
4. Glue the word stem on the chart where the arrow points to the stem.
5. Next cut out the word leaf, glue it to the box that points to a leaf on the flower.
6. Now cut out the word petals, glue it to the box that points to the petals.
7. Lastly, cut out the word roots and place it in the box that points to the roots of the flower.
8. Now that we have completed our model, I want you to use construction paper and make
your own flower.
9. You will have about 15 minutes to make the flower.
10. Give each student a black marker.
11. Students, now I want you to use your flower model that we made together, copy the
parts of the plant on your flower.
12. When done, find a spot around the room to hang it and I will staple it to the wall.

Assessment items:
Since this is an informal assessment I am going to score their flower labeling activity out
of 10 points. This will not count as a grade, but I am checking to see if they understand
the four main parts of the flower, before having them identify more parts of the flower.
Assessment criteria:
Handwriting is neat and legible
Parts of the plant are labeled correctly
Construction paper flower is neat
Parts of the plant are spelled correctly
Scoring:
Point values
10 points: worksheet is labeled correctly, words are written neatly and spelled correctly.
Construction paper flower is neat, parts are labeled correctly, words are written neatly
and spelled correctly.
5 points: worksheet is labeled somewhat correctly with a few errors. Terms are written
somewhat legible. Construction paper is somewhat neat and parts are labeled correctly
with a few errors in either spelling or labeling the parts of the flower.
0 points- little to no effort, needs more instruction on labeling and identifying parts of the
plant.
