Assignment Instructions #1

Genre: Letter to an Author

Read the following Poem

Take up the White Mans burdenSend forth the best ye breed

Go send your sons to exile To serve your captives' need

To wait in heavy harness On fluttered folk and wild

Your new-caught, sullen peoples, Half devil and half child

Take up the White Mans burden In patience to abide

To veil the threat of terror And check the show of pride;

By open speech and simple An hundred times made plain

To seek anothers profit And work anothers gain

Take up the White Mans burdenAnd reap his old reward:

The blame of those ye better The hate of those ye guard

The cry of hosts ye humour (Ah slowly) to the light:

"Why brought ye us from bondage, Our loved Egyptian night?

Take up the White Mans burden- Have done with childish days-

The lightly proffered laurel, The easy, ungrudged praise.

Comes now, to search your manhood Through all the thankless years,

Cold-edged with dear-bought wisdom, The judgment of your peers!

Mr. Kipling,

Your poem White Mans Burden is about the white races supposed

responsibility to civilize people of color for their own good. The White Mans Burden

you refer to is speaking off bringing technology and western values such as free trade,

industrial technology, and Christianity to the rest of the world. This poem is important

because it was part of the reason westerners thought it was ok to conquer people in

African and Asia. Europeans thought they would be better off if they were conquered. I

think that you are wrong for two reasons. The first is that Europe and America have no

right to conquer other countries even if its in their own interest. The people who live in

those countries should get to decide how they live. The second reason I think you are

wrong is that Europe and America did not make things better for other countries in Africa

and Asia. They made them very poor and forced them to work not for their own best

interests, but westerners best interests. I think your poem is wrong and you should trust

people to do what they want in their own countries.
