Chromatography and Yeast Lab

Chromatography is the study of

pigments. For this lab we were
tasked to record the movement
of pigments across a plane of
paper after being pressed with
different plant pigment. After the
paper would be bent and added
into a container with alcohol
solution at the bottom. The
alcohol would spread upward
and carry the pigment with it, this
would test the staining of a
certain pigment as well as show
the color of said pigment which
could be used to identify the type
of pigment. In this lab
chlorophyll, xanthophyll,
anthocyanin, violaxatin, and
lutein were present.
Yeast lab
In this yeast lab
we tested
anaerobic
fermentation in
single celled
baker's yeast as
well as the
normal sugar
cube for
fuel/energy. The
process of
foaming occurs
as a byproduct
gas, CO2 of the reactions taking place. The yeast was added as a solution of water at 10 ml,
then after sugar was placed then incubated for 1o min at a average temperature of 36. The
yeast would turn to fermentation when oxygen is not present. This reaction takes place in the
mitochondria, where glucose and enzymes are used to create CO2 and ethanol, or lactic acid in
humans. This is the process go to when oxygen cannot be used. The optimal sugar and yeast
needed is ofcourse limited on both spectrums, and the yeast will either die, or not have enough
energy.
