1. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
1.1. INTRODUCTION
Subject matter of this design is the remediation of a rockfall at the cutting between km 10+400
and km 10+600, section 1, on Rreshen Kalimash motorway.

The adopted design comprises the following remediation works:

- execution of a support structure,
- redirection of water flows above the rockfall forehead,
- forehead regulation,
- filling and closing of tension cracks,
- execution of surface channels on the surface being rehabilitated,
- execution of pipe drains,
- execution of a rockfall protection barrier.

The remediation works shall commence through site preparation.

1.2. SITE PREPARATION

Site preparation encompass execution of access roads, ditch dewatering (km 10+460 km
10+490) and provisional protection works.
The access road should be executed to the head of the rockfall. The access road between the
motorway and the embankment and gabion construction site shall be constructed simultaneously
as the embankment is constructed, starting at greater chainages.
The ditch at the cut toe (km 10+460 km 10+490) has to be partially filled and dewatering will
be allowed into the motorway surface channel.
The provisional protection shall be executed in areas of execution of the works. The contractor
shall define method of the protection to be applied. The following text describes possible
protection methods. The works should be started at those locations where an edge of the first
bench is unobstructed. In those location where it is not so, it is necessary to use machinery with
longer hands which may perform excavation from a side and from a greater distance. The
excavation should be executed just in that area where the works are about to be commenced.
The rockfall material uphill from the bench should be held together using fibre shotcrete, while
H beams should be placed along the edge of the bench. The beams should be drilled into the
rock and concreted in their lower section while securing them using anchors and steel cables in
their upper section. Timber beams shall be placed between the H-section beams. Apart from this
protection, the contractor may use movable protection (a steel frame covered by timber beams)
which shall be moved as the works progress.

1.3. SUPPORT STRUCTURE

The support structure consists of massive anchored concrete block, gabions with ties (Terramesh
System) and the embankment.
1.3.1. Concrete block
The concrete block will be made of C30/37 reinforced concrete. Position of the concrete block is
defined in such manner that its front side is at a constant distance of 12.5 m away from axis of
the motorway. Total height is 12.95 - 14.84 m. Depth of the foundation is 1.3 m below elevation

of the axis, while width of the foundation is 3.41 4.56 m. The foundation width is defined
according to a geodetic survey of as-built condition of the cut. If there will be differences of
actual situation and the as-built records, they should be documented and it is not necessary to
widen the excavation in the rock.
The drainage shall be executed at the junction of the concrete block and the slope. The
drainage consists of the drainage pipe placed at the toe of the slope and surface drainage
Terrafix, Terradrain 600 (or equivalent approved).
The concrete block is executed in the full width up to elevation of 8.0 m above the axis of the
motorway, which is approximately equal to the height of the first bench. Above that elevation,
the concrete block shall be narrowed to decrease the amount of concrete. Height of the
narrowed part is variable and it shall be 3.65-5.54 m.
The upper surface of the concrete block full width part shall follow the elevation of the
motorway along the length of the structure. This type of execution facilitates draining of water
within the drainage system. Transversal grade of the surface should be executed towards the
drainage trench. Transversal drainage trenches are executed at spacing of 10 m.
The upper level of the narrowed part shall be horizontal with changes of its height from km
10+530, every 10 m in steps of 0.5 m. In this way the gabions shall be founded on the horizontal
surfaces. Width at the top shall be 3.0 m.
Face of the concrete block shall be executed at 5:1 grade.
Geotechnical anchors shall be executed on the front side of the concrete block at spacing of 2
m. In each such cross-section 2 anchors and 2 pipes for 2 additional anchors shall be executed. A
total of 4 anchor insertion pipes shall be placed at 2 m intervals. Recesses in the concrete block
face shall be executed in areas where the anchors shall be executed between elevation 2.3 m
from the bottom to the top of the concrete blockl. The recesses shall be 0.5 m deep and wide.
The geotechnical anchors shall be executed in a total length of 23 m, comprising 15 m free
length and 8 m bonded lenght. The following is designed to be executed:
DYWIDAG Strand anchors
Permanent anchors with double corrosion protection
8 x 0.6",
A = 1.120 mm2, PULT = 2.185 kN
(or equivalent approved).
The execution of the concrete block shall start with the excavation of the rockfall material
below the first bench. Excavation of the foundations and excavation of the drainage shall follow.
Drainage pipes and surface drainage - terradrain shall be placed. The next step shall be the
placement of reinforcement and anchorage equipment, formwork and concrete-work. The
concrete block shall be executed in segments up to 10 m long, and segment breaks must not be
located in the cross-sections where the anchors shall be placed.
The concrete block shall be executed in the full cross-section up to the elevation 8.0 above the
motorway axis. At specified elevation the drainage shall be executed at the back side, while in
its front side, the concrete block is resumed at a narrowed width.
The geotechnical anchors shall be drilled and placed through the insertion pipes placed in the
concrete block.

1.3.2. Gabions with ties

The gabions with ties are designed as the Maccafferi Terramesh System (or equivalent approved
system). The gabions shall be executed in two 9 m tall blocks with faces executed at 5:1 grade.
A bench shall be executed at the connection of the blocks. The design entails use of 4x2x1 m
and 4x2x0.5 m basic elements. Additional reinforcement between the rows of the gabions shall

be performed using Maccafferi ParaLink 200 type geomesh (or equivalent approved). The lengths
of the additional reinforcement shall be 5-19 m.

1.3.3. Embankment
The embankment shall be executed on the tendon gabion meshes, behind the meshes and above
the gabion wall. The embankment above the gabion wall shall be executed to produce a gentler
slope and to support steeper parts. The material shall be placed and compacted.

1.4. REDIRECTION OF WATER FLOWS ABOVE THE ROCKFALL FOREHEAD

Redirection of water flows above the rockfall forehead, should be performed to eliminate one of
main reasons for occurrence of the rockfall. Concentration of water flows towards the cut
occurred in the area of km 10+510 cross-section due to construction of access roads required for
excavation of the cutting. The water should be redirected from the access roads in such places
and in such manner to eliminate any future impact to the cut.

1.5. FOREHEAD REGULATION

The Forehead regulation shall be executed using shotcrete and rock anchors. The shotcrete shall
be executed in two 5 cm layers and reinforced using Q188 reinforcing steel meshes. The anchors
shall be 6 m long. They shall be made of RA 400/500 ribbed steel, comprising 32 mm diameter,
and they shall be executed perpendicular to the 15o slope defined by the design.

1.6. FILLING AND CLOSING OF TENSION CRACKS

Filling and closing of the tension cracks shall be performed in upper section of the rockfall. All
the cracks shall be filled using fine-grained stone material. Additionally, the main tensile crack
found at the head of the rockfall shall be closed using a geomembrane.

1.7. SURFACE CHANNELS

The remediation zone surface shall be drained by means of execution of surface channels. The
channels shall also receive water from 3 gullies. The channels shall drain into a culvert passing
below the motorway at km 10+670.

1.8. PIPE DRAINS

Pipe drains shall be executed from the top of the embankment through the material transported
by the rockfall to the rockfall plane. Self drilling ALEWAG, AT CASING SYSTEM drains (or
equivalent approved), shall be executed. The drains shall be 30 m long.

1.9. ROCKFALL PROTECTION BARRIER

The rockfall protection barrier shall be executed above the gabions with ties. It is necessary to
install a 2 m tall elastic protective barrier capable of sustaining 500 kJ impacts. The elastic
barrier must be tested and it must possess appropriate certificates as a system in compliance
with international guidelines. It is not permitted to install any barriers which have not been
previously tested and certified as a system.

1.10 EMERGENCY MEASURES

The measures which shall prevent negative effects of the surface water to stability of the
rockfall must be implemented in the upper section of the slope as soon as possible. If the
execution of the access prevents immediate execution of the works in full designed scope, it is
necessary to apply temporary solutions. The water should be diverted out of the area affected
by the rockfall and the cracks should be closed up.

1.11. TEST ANCHORS

Prior to execution, it is necessary to install 3 test anchors which shall be subjected to anchor
load bearing capacity tests. Loads shall be applied to the test anchors until failure or up to the
maximum load permitted for the used cables.

1.12. MONITORING
Prior to commencement of the works, it is necessary to start a geodetic survey monitoring of the
rockfall. Surveying bases should be set up on appropriate locations (monumented benchmarks
used to set up instrumentation), while markers should be placed on the rockfall surface. The
markers should be monitored continuously during performance of the works in order to assure
safety.
In order to control efficacy of the works performed it is planned to install deformeters,
inclinometers and load measuring equipment at individual anchors. The installed monitoring
devices should be read during and after the execution of the remediation works.
