Language and literature: Word building (adjectives and verbs)


1 You can change the meaning of a word by adding a prefix (a group of letters). But be careful: adding a
prefix doesnt always change the word to its opposite meaning. Complete the table with the meanings
of the prefixes. Use the words in the box.

Bella Swan isnt like other teenagers. She doesnt have the same interests
as the other girls at her high school in Phoenix, Arizona, and she doesnt want
to. When (1) her mother finds a new husband and Bella moves back to her
fathers home in Washington, she doesnt expect her life to change very
much. But she is very wrong.
In her new town, Bella starts high school. There she meets Edward Cullen,
one of the pupils. (2) He isnt the same as any other boy shes ever met. In
fact, hes very different. Although she thinks hes unfriendly at the beginning
of the film, they become friends and Bella realizes that she
(3) has been wrong about him.
As Bella and Edward fall in love, Bella starts to learn some strange things about him. He can stop a
moving car with his hands and can run faster than a lion. His skin is always freezing cold. And (4) he
hasnt got older since 1918. A human cant do these things. Bella discovers that Edward is a vampire.
However, Edward isnt a typical vampire. He hasnt got long teeth thats only in films and he
doesnt drink blood from humans! But although he loves her, he finds the smell of Bellas blood almost
irresistible. They have the added problem that Bellas father doesnt agree with their relationship.
But the trouble really starts (5) when a visitor that Edward didnt know about comes to town. This
visitor, James, is also a vampire and has an unhealthy appetite for Bella. James bites her. Will she
now become a vampire, too?
Edward can save Bella if he takes out the poison from James bite. But then she can only spend her
lifetime with him and not eternity. Edwards love for Bella influences his decision. If you dont know the
end of the story, I wont tell you. Watch the film and find out!
